Can I rename a rom?
« on: November 04, 2011, 09:55:31 pm »
Hey guys,

I'm trying to setup two versions of NBA Jam to play on my 2 player cab.

I want one game like normal so P1 & P2 by default are on the same team.
Then the other setup so that my player 2 joy & buttons control P3 so two people can play against each other.

That parts no problem, I've mapped the buttons in two diff versions of the game so I can do that.
The only problem is I can't tell the difference between the two before i run the game.
In my Mala menu I've got it set up to remove info from brackets and just leave the game name, which means they both show up as "NBA JAM".

Is there a way I can modify the game name in a rom so I can display something like this in the menu?
"NBA JAM - 2 player Co-op"
"NBA JAM - 2 player versus"

You can change what appears for the game name (and manufacturer, year, etc) by modifying mame.xml found in the MAME folder.
(Mala puts it there the first time it is run)

Just open and edit it with notepad.
Search for the rom name to find the entry for the game.
It's a huge file, so it might take a while to open or save after making changes.
It helps to turn wordwrap off.

I have done this within Mala itself via the gameslist feature.

I dont' know if your using the default "All Games" but assuming you have a gameslist setup for your games just go into the gameslist tab select your list and hit the edit button and then on the right side of the list if you right click the name of the the game in question, it will allow you to edit the display name and what rom it is associated with.

I've done this to shorten names of ROMS for layout purposes and also to account for roms that weren't in the "All Games" list for some reason like Viper Phase 1 and Xexex.

I've followed the instructions in this thread for NBA Jam, and now have two copies in my MALA game list, one that says "vs. Mode".  I've set those players to work the way I like.

But I want to do the same for 2 on 2 open ice challenge (NHL).  I only have one rev of this game.

Can I make a duplicate somehow with different control setups?
