The end is nigh for the worlds oldest airline
« on: October 30, 2011, 12:17:07 am »
Having been born in the 'NT' part and now living in the 'Q' part, I'm more than a bit bummed that it seems like curtains for QANTAS

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-10-29/qantas-locking-out-staff/3608250

I hope I'm wrong, but they've been in trouble for a few years now. It sucks too, because I always use them on domestic flights- they have just that bit more legroom in economy class than the cut price carriers. Important for tall folk.

I'm also bummed because I've been concerned for a while, and my parents have shares in QANTAS. I should have told them to sell them. If operations resume, the price is going to be trashed. I can't help but feel pessimistic after having just read 'Punching Out'. I don't understand how airlines can survive still charging the same prices they did 15, 20 years ago. They're all killing themselves with an unofficial price war...

edit: I should say first world airlines are killing themselves. As they do, airlines from poorer countries will step in. They already have a sizeable and growing share of the market. They also have lower safety standards...

They used to advertise like crazy in the US... They had a koala that looked at tourists and proclaimed "I hate Qantas".
It has been forever since I've seen any ads on TV or in print for them in the US.

Yeah, they are the tenth largest airline by flights. I'm pretty sure in another ten years or so, there won't be any 'western' airlines in that top ten...
