Wells D9200 +ArcadeVGA limiting??
« on: September 15, 2003, 01:53:16 pm »
I am looking to buy an ready to roll MAME cabinet online.  After a little searching I homed in on DreamAuthentics.com and their new MEGA cabinet, see example at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3241241623&category=13716

Upon doing more research I found out they their top of the line cabinet included an older Wells 33K3001 arcade monitor that was limited to 15 kHz.  The bundled it with a decent PC that included an Ultimarc ArcadeVGA video card.  Well upon searching the net as well as your site I came informed about the Wells D9200 "hybrid" displays that are not limited to just 15 kHz.  In talks with DreamAuthentics I informed then of the limitation I viewed with the flagship unit carrying a much older 15 kHz only Wells model + ArcadeVGA combo.

It is my understanding that with the D9200 series paired with a PC and a regular video card (ATI specifically) that all modes including 15, 21 and 31 kHz are possible.  My concern with the pre-built cabinet from DreamAuthentics was that more recent arcade games (240+ vert lines) would have to undergo some stretching or interlacing to display properly on a 15kHz limited display.

Assuming my assumptions are correct I am now stuck with not being able to buy their awesome cabinet strictly because I don't want to sacrifice native resolution in some newer arcade games via MAME.  Do my concerns make sense?  After doing research and reading FAQs around the web such as the ones on Ultimarcs own site..I am left wary about a $5000+ investment that isn't fully compatible with more recent arcade games resolutions.  I have to mention that I am not interested in building a cab from scratch, thus the reason why DreamAuthentics solution was initially so attractive.  What can you recommend to me?

Thanks,
Brad

and even people here now have budgets of $2500+ and now even bidding on $5k+ mame cabs.....

sorry.... I feel a little depressed.....

hyiu,

Then you have those REEAAL bright ones that spend the $2500 on a mame cab while driving a $1500 Ford?  What is up with that?  Of course I am not talking about me, it is a "friend" of mine.   ::)

Brad,

Read that thread hyiu posted.

After an obscene amount of research and literally talking with all of the small businesses offering turnkey cabs the best option was www.jjscustomarcades.com

You will get the most for your money there or www.projectmame.com  I suggest you interview them both, investigate, use that thread and you will do well.

I have said it about before, but BYOAC community has some great people.  It was terrific to have somewhere to get information and verify that I wasn't being misled while researching a cab.  I knew nothing when three weeks ago.

I don't see the problem here! If someone has $5000 to spend on a cabinet that seems fine to me providing he's not a drug dealer...

To answer the question: The D9200 can display all the modes from 15Khz up to 31Khz but still needs to be driven by the PC correctly. So this means either Advanced MAME or the ArcadeVGA card with the D9200 utility which enables some 31Khz modes.

With the D9200 monitor it is my understanding the ArcadeVGA video card is not optimal because it only supports 15kHz screen resolution modes (240 vertical lines and below)

I was thinking of getting a more modern card like an ATI 9800.  I have been told that all you have to do is hack the registry to add the lower resolution modes to any capable video card.

I am not sure if this enables plug-n-play 100% authentic resolutions via MAME on the D9200 or if a little more tweaking and possibly using AdvanceMAME is necessary.  I would prefer not to have to tweak games specific resolution modes unless absolutely necessary.
