I have been keeping very close tabs on the rasberrypi since it was announced and i originally had my heart set on using it for a small single player bartop cabinet (my first build). the unit pictured above is actually the cheapest of the two units. for 10 dollars more you will get two usb slots, standard RCA TV Out, ethernet port and an sd card slot. There's still over one month expected release date at the earliest. Not to mention very few alpha boards were given out.
the XBMC guys, a few QT folks, Meego and some other lucky fellas have test units. No current emu freaks such as ourselves have a test unit. The first run will only be a meager 10,000 units and is expected to sell out within the first few days. The second run is all but officially scheduled. This could be an incredibly powerful and low power unit to run Mame but its going to be a while until we see a viable port. Look for this to change the hobbyist computing world in 2012. It is being marketed mainly as a charity/educational product and also as a sort of disposable computing device for young people.
Currently debian arm runs out of the box. The Fedora linux team has already shown off some videos of their distro working on the raspi and have officially pledged full fedora support for the unit in the next few releases.
