My monitor is ticking, video inside
« on: October 22, 2011, 11:37:59 am »
I turned on my video games for the weekend and my 25" monitor inside my Mortal Kombat II machine is ticking. This is a MAME machine, but I don't think the video card has anything to do with it. It ticks when it's powered on regardless of whether it's plugged into the computer or not. The tick sounds like a short thats arcing. The video on the screen shows a little artifacting, but it's very playable. If I didn't hear it, I may not have noticed.

I took this video from my phone of where the sound seems to be coming from. Ignore all the high pitched sounds, I didn't hear those sounds when I took the video. I am a monitor n00b, so if you want me to do anything please give instructions in great detail.

Sounds like arcing to me. Turn off all the lighting in the room to track down where the arc is coming from.

Right on. Followed your suggestion and found it. In the attached pic, thats where I found the arc. The blue line is where the arc was and how big it was. I turned off the game, moved some wires around and it's still making the arc.

What should I do now?

You need to replace the flyback. There's no "fixing" that....its cracked and arcing thru the casing. Its gotta go. Not a good idea to run it that way....

It depends on how bad the crack is, and whether you can get anything into it, but you may wish to try a high voltage sealant (something like this) to see if it takes care of the problem.

Ok...

Couple questions.

Is that a component that you would recommend a monitor n00b replace?
How do I track down which flyback is the right flyback for me?

The machine is off now.

Ticking is definitely a sign of a blown flyback.
Replacing a flyback isn't super hard but it does call for discharging the monitor (some noobs don't like doing that) and most time when the flyback blows, it also takes out the Horizontal Output Transistor.
some places to check for flybacks would be Bob Roberts or Arcade Cup.
You can even send the monitor chassis board to arcade cup and have it fixed.
Its definitely worth it to get fixed because 25" monitors are getting very difficult to find.
Do you know what monitor it is? I'm guessing maybe a u5000?

Its just a k7000 series monitor. F-backs are easily obtained for those....not that expensive either.

As far as the horiz output, don't worry about that. The monitor was still running, so that is not even an issue here.

The only thing I can say about replacing the part is, if you're not fairly skilled with a soldering iron and haven't had to desolder things from a pc board, you may want to have someone do it for you. The traces are a little fragile on those 7000 boards and easy to tear up if not done correctly.
