Planning Stages
« on: October 07, 2011, 10:36:44 am »
I've been a long time reader here from way back.  I am going to be finishing my basement in the spring and wanted to turn one of the rooms into a game room, so...I blew the dust off my old plans and began reading everything I can on this site and the 2nd edition of Saint's book.

I want to make a Knievel woody cabinet of sorts.  I'm trying to determine the width I need to make the cabinet.  I've read it looks like I should be making it about 25"s.  I've already purchased an HP LP2065 off ebay and it has arrived.  It's 17.5" across, then of course adding an inch or two for a bezel.  I would like to have an LCD Marquee and it looks like people were looking at this: http://www.amazon.com/LG-M2900S-BN-panel-display-widescreen/dp/B001F4R2KQ  Prices have come down to the point that I'm okay with it.  BUT...it's 30" wide.  My concern is, if I make the cab wide enough to handle it, wouldn't that make the bezel look too big (or my main monitor too small)?  What are your thoughts?

I thought maybe I could take up some of the space by putting a small 6" LCD in the bezel to show the controls for that particular game, but then where do I put it?  I thought about putting it below the 20" monitor and center it for P1 and P2, but if I go with that LCD Marquee, it's the sides of the bezel I think would look funky.  If I put the 6" LCD on the side, would I need to go with two of them (one for P1 and one for P2)?  If I do get to put a 6" LCD in here, are there any recommendations on which one would work best?  I thought about a PS1 LCD, but honestly, I really don't want to need to hack it, I'd prefer to plug-and-play if possible.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance.

Found it a little cheaper here:
http://www.thenerds.net/LG_ELECTRONICS.LG_M2900S_BN_29_Stretch_Screen_Commercial_LCD_Monitor.M2900SBN.html

At that price I think you'd be happier if you got a less wide 16:9 display and just covered up part of it some how.

Yeah, I saw RandyT's (I think I remember that right) where he put an LCD TV up there for the marquee and I like how he used to display.  I'm not a fan have having it stick that far above the cab though.  I'm trying to get a clean lined cab (as much as possible anyway).  I really like the look of the Woody, just would like to get an LCD of some kind up there.  Cutting a display isn't an option because that's more money than I want to spend.  I like the idea of the LG monitor there, but am concerned what it will do to the overall proportions of the cab.
