The specific game I problem solved enough to say it definitively occuring with is Gauntlet 2p, rev 6 (gauntlet2p) on Mame 0.136 with vmame64.exe.

The game runs FINE when launched using the same command line that MA should be passing from a command line/box/whatever.  From MA, just sits at a black screen.

So...few things - is there a way to get feedback on what's going on 'behind the scenes' with MA so I can see what's causing the issue?  As it is now, I have nothing to even work from.

There's a number of other games that do this as well...just go to a black screen.  I was figuring it was bad dumps/unworking games but it's just too frequent to be sheer coincidence.  I think something's screwed up for certain games and I'd like to figure out why...that and I want the damn gauntlet 2p working on my cab.

Looks like someone is having similar issues (or did) here: http://maximusarcade.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2193

Any ideas anyone?  ANything?  This seriously sucks.

Edit:
So...seems the default of 'short' paths doesn't work for all MAME roms - make sure to set that to long or you'll have issues as I did.

One step closer to 'final'. :)

Hrm.  I don't really like them (don't see the point) but I'll try tonight and see if they do.  I'm running 0.136 now and getting it setup with that - not sure if I'll swtich yet as I don't see the benefit.
