Newer Arcade Games and the best way to get them to work.
« on: October 01, 2011, 10:53:31 am »
Hey Guys,

First I want to pay homage to the original arcade games, I know they are classics but they are not the ones I grew up with. Now that I have got started on my own mame cab I have a few questions that I havent found a straight answer to yet.  :dunno

My cab will have a 4 player cp with only 8 way sticks, no 4 way, no spinner, no ball, (possibly guns).

1. I want to be able to play games like metal slug series, street fighter, tmnt, simpsons, tekken, police trainer, mortal kombat, nfl blitz, nba jam, Marvel super heroes vs street fighter, etc

What is the best emulator to make this happen? I have Mame32 right now.

2. Since i am extremely new to the mame scene this question might make you laugh but, I went to mamedev.org and downloaded the emultator but never could get it to work. I had to download mame32 from an older site to get a emulator to work. Should I be using this emulator over mame32? if so how?

3. I have a newer comp with an aftermarket video card in it so it should be able to handle the "newer" arcade games.

4. Lastly I have been trying to design a good layout for a 4player cp, can't do it:banghead: would anyone here like to design it for me? so that I can print it out at a kinkos or something on a large piece of paper?   if so I would be eternaly greatful! :applaud:

Thanks for all the help and advice guys I have been a lurker on this site for awhile and have posted once or twice and everyone here has always been more than helpful with the questions I have had. THANK YOU ALL! :notworthy:

1. NFL Blitz might be the only game you won't be able to run 100% depending on your PC Specs...Everything else on that list shouldn't be an issue.

Get MAME... and a front end such as HYPERSPIN

---Anything before i'd say 1999-2002 should be fine.

go to:
http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/downloads.php?do=file&id=3231
or
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=00DLH1SX and download Hyperspin...

Extract all that stuff into a folder called "Hyperspin"

You should now have the following files:

At this point if you double click on "hyperspin" you should see the animation intro along with various emulators listed on the "wheel".

To use the wheel scroll with your keyboard up and down, to select MAME find the MAME logo and hit "Enter" on your keyboard, you should see a large list of all of the MAME games in this section which looks like this:

To exit the program "the front end" aka hyperspin, hit "ESC" It should take you back to the main wheel, hit "ESC" again it will ask you if you want to exit hit YES.

now going back to the folder list look for "HyperHQ"

Once you launch HyperHQ Click on the top tab that says " Wheel Settings", and under choose wheel , select MAME.

You should now see this:

Basically you need to point HYPERSPIN to wherever your MAME is, along with where your ROMS are, by default they are placed within the hyperspin folder, but you might need to redirect it accordingly.

If you didn't already download MAME from Mamedev.org... you can click this : http://mamedev.org/downloader.php?file=releases/mame0143b.exe

A big mistake is sometimes people download the MAME source, when for your purposes your going to want the binary.
so you want the file: "mame0143b.exe"

I extracted all of my files to my desktop to a folder called "MAME", you should see the following files in that folder:

Now going back into "HyperHQ", I changed the directories, once again click on wheel settings, then select mame. Click on the tiny folders and adjust them according to where you put your MAME folder etc.. as shown below:

Did you notice that the list of roms is insanely too big and too many repeat etc.. Well it's time to trim down some of the unwanted clones and large list of stuff that you probably don't need..
In HyperHQ select "Navigation/Themes", Click the little box that says "parents only"

Make sure you close HyperHQ before re-launching Hyperspin, it should automatically save any changes you make in HyperHQ when you exit. Now assuming you placed all of your ROMS in the Rom folder where MAME is, when you go to that game on the list it should work.

You need to update Hyperspin to 1.1 to do so download this :
http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/downloads.php?do=file&id=3232

Extract into your existing Hyperspin folder, if it asks you to overwrite it, hit YES etc...

Again one more update:
HyperSpin 1.2 Update Pack ....
http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/downloads.php?do=file&id=3619

Again..Extract into your existing Hyperspin folder, if it asks you to overwrite it hit YES etc....

You should now have hyperspin working and it should be up to date./ being able to launch games.. if you want to add eye candy this is where Hyperspin really rocks..download the .flv aka movie files from emumovies. Join the Hyperspin forum become a member and gain access to all of the themes on the FTP.

Just as a quick example..
this is the theme download section for MAME : http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/downloads.php?do=cat&id=129

I chose "Wild Western" since it's close to the top of the list.. the file you are about to download is labled "Wild Western - wwestern-mattedsmith(20110925).zip" however:::

**Re-name the .zip of wild western to : "wwestern.zip"

place that file "wwestern.zip" into Media/MAME/THEME folder.

Your MAME Theme folder within hyperspin should look like this :

Now relaunch Hyperspin... and if you scroll on your list you should see this when you go to the game Wild Western:

go back to http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/downloads.php?do=cat&id=129

repeat the above process and add / download the themes you want for the games you want. You must re-name the themes to the corresponding names of the ROMS... Just as we changed  Wild Western - wwestern-mattedsmith(20110925).zip, to "wwestern.zip"

(Or again just join the Hyperspin Forums, download all of the themes which are already re-named and just drop them into the corresponding themes folder.)

now.... go back into "HyperHQ"

Hit "Wheel Settings" tab, followed again by chose a wheel tab, click "MAME"
Go over to the "Navigation/Themes" tab again'
Under "wheel filters" click the check box that says "Themes Only"

What that does is it only displays games you have themes for, so lets say you only want 25 games in MAME instead of 5,000 it will only display the games which you have downloaded themes for. Alternatively you can always have a favorites section but I don't want to confuse you.

So now if you close HyperHQ, re-launch Hyperspin, click any key to skip the video intro of hyperspin if you wish... go to MAME.. you should now just have a wheel with the wild western theme.. Unless you added additional themes.

-Good Luck!

If you're still having issues with this my guess is you need to update your roms to work with whatever newer version of Mame you're trying to use.
