The way I thought that I would do mine is by hooking up the coin mech to the IPac and route the cable to insert coin switch on MAME...

Is that the correct way you Arcade Gurus...

You do not interface coin mechs to a pc.  All a coin mech does is sort "good" coins from "bad" coins.  Once a mech has sorted a good coin, the coin then falls down a chute and the coin triggers a switch.  It is this switch that you interface to the pc.

He said it...
There is a switch at the bottom of the coin mech (it's actually part of the coin door, but if you've never seen them seperatly, then it's just at the bottom of where the mech is.)

The wires from this switch should be hooked to your keyboard interface (IPAC, Keyboard Hack, other encoder). The player 1 switch should be connected to the "5" key & player 2 should be connected to the "6" key.

If you have any other Qs, please ask.

Covered in the FAQ:

http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~darrelld/newbie.html#Coin Door

nb: there have been a lot, and I mean a lot, of basic questions being asked lately.  Shouldn't we be referring n00bs to the FAQ when this happens?

ok ok....the coin goes into the slot, if it's accepted, it hits a long type pin dealie all the way at the bottom, which i'm assuming triggers this switch. i guess my question would be, would activating the coin mech be worth the trouble? cause wouldn't i have to take apart the keyboard, find out exactly where the the '1' and '2' buttons are mapped, and then wire the coin mech to the keyboard? maybe i'm still misunderstanding this whole process. btw i'm using an xarcade joystick

You would just connect the coin switch in parallel with the coin button on your xarcade.  No keyboard hacking required as your xarcade already provides the interface.
