« on: September 12, 2003, 09:32:20 pm »
howdy all
i bought me a sitdown racing cab that i've been trying to convert to run mame
i need to know what my options are for hooking up the steering wheel other than the jpac
i tried using my ipac but it just caused my car to spin constantly in one direction
i'm hopin to hack a psx pad for this one though, so if i can hook it up that way, i just need to know how
it uses a potentimeter (or something like that)
with 3 wires
i'm guessin ground, right and left
anywayz
ANY help would be great
thanx

What I'd do would be to swap out the pot and wire the wheel up as a computer joystick.

Here's a page that details swapping the pots.
http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade_jude.shtml

Lew's Wheels is a DIY wheel building page, good info available there as well. http://www.monmouth.com/~lw4750/index.html

Alternatively, 1up's dual strike controller hack would work with a wheel as well. http://www.1uparcade.com/projects-dualstrike.html

thanx for all the good info
but is there a way that i can hack it so i can use it with my dreamcast and playstations
would i just rip the pot off of the arcade and wire it to the ps2 or psx pad?
if there really isn't a good way to do it, i suppose that i'll just have to live with driving games on the computer
but i was really lookin forward to playin crazy taxi :)
later

There is another answer... and I think a better one.

Its the 1up starwars hack.

there is a single (only one we know of anyway) pc joystick that used 5k pots (20kpots but only 1/4 turn).  Its the microsoft dual strike.

Not a hard hack... and you can get them for about 5 - 10 bucks on ebay.

btw, 100k pots that are good enought quality for arcade uses are going for about 40bucks each at happs.  They aren't cheap.  And you need 2... and at the end you have to hack it to a gameport.
