Sanwa JLW. Anyone still using them? Did some mods
« on: September 28, 2011, 10:12:47 pm »
I replaced the happ ultimates with the Sanwa JLW's and what a world of a difference.  One thing i didnt like though was how loud it was and clicky.  Luckily i had some happ supers lying around with cherry switches and levers :)  Swapped them out and now im in heaven  :applaud:  Did you know that the switches in the JLW have springs in them as well to make them super stiff.  I only have about 1/2" sticking out of the pannel and was able to add another 1/4" by putting a bolt on the shaft and only screwing the ball down half way.  Not experiencing any issues due to me doing that.

If any of you were thinking about switching out, DO IT!!!  If you want it a bit quieter and smoother, order some cherries with levers on them cause the levers on the sanwa switches are not compatable.

I've got some JLWs and am pretty pleased with them so far. I installed Ultimarc's octagonal restrictors (for their U360s) on my JLWs as well as harder springs, they are now MUCH BETTER joysticks than what they were stock.

You can just open the Sanwa micro switches and swap the levers to the Cherry switches, I seen someone on here do that. It's easy to do.

Tried that and the sanwa levers are a bit bigger from what i see.  They wouldnt fit for me  :embarassed:

And as for fighting games?  AWESOME!  dragon punches all day long and fireballs :)

Sorry, I think it might of been the JLF stick I did that to. Yeah, I put Cherry switches on my JLW too, a big difference :applaud:

Im now noticing that playing games such as Robotron, the diagnals are hit a bit too easy.  I find it hard to just go left, right, up down :dunno  Im using the square gates.  Should i upgrade to the round ones?

The square gates may seem awkward at first in fighting games, but once you get used to them you won't want anything else.  A lot of fighting game players have tried the octo gates, but they almost all eventually go back to the stock design.  It's just too helpful to be able to ride the gate and find diagonal corners easily.

Yea, the octagonal restrictors I used are for the U360s, which sucks because they're $14 a pop due to the additional hardware that is included for the U360's pcb. The harder springs I used are also from Ultimarc, after installing them the sticks feel much more solid which makes them feel like a higher quality stick.

That might fit a JLW, I don't know for sure. I put the octagonal restrictors on my JLWs because that was the restrictor I chose for my U360s (my set up includes 2 of each), and well, a U360 is just a modified JLW so I knew they would work. I picked them for the U360s because I didn't want the circular restrictor, but wanted to be able to squeeze out a little more analog room than the square restrictor (even though analog is hindered with any restrictor on the U360), while still being able to feel not only the diagonals easily, but the verticals and horziontals as well. Advantage? It's more of a preference thing, sense of worth is subjective. Circular motions are more fluid as opposed to when using a square restrictor. The biggest contribution to making the JLWs better would be the harder springs, they don't feel as flimsy once the springs are installed. Try it out, it's only money.

I will try out a JLF octo restrictor on my JLW.  You'd have to drill holes to mount it though :(

How much are the octos for the U360's?

I agree that the JLWs are great sticks.
Thanks for the idea of trying some older cherrys with levers, I find the click of the Sanwas a bit annoying.
I'm also gonna try the stiffer spring.
anyone know of a US source for the stiffer spring? In the mean time, I'll just stretch the stock ones.

What about the 5 dollar JLF octos? Do they fit JLW and/or U360s?

Doubtful. I don't think anyone has tried it yet, and it looks like some modifications would need to be made to the restrictor to fit it to a JLW.

I originally thought the holes circled in the pic would work, but the points of the octagon do not line up with those holes like the U360 restrictors do.

Might be kind of difficult to put some new mounting holes in the proper locations on this restrictor. If the holes circled are the same radius as the mounting holes of the JLW, you might be able to get away with just slotting them.

you can also do this mod to any switch to make it virtually silent.  I dont know if anyone else stole this idea from GGG but this is what I did.

In the description, there is a pic as well to help out.  These are the exact same as the GGG ones but only costs $0.25 to mod any switch :)

Just fiddling around with these mods tonight. I ordered the stiffer springs Sunday night from Divemaster, so we'll see how that goes.

I took the Cherry switches off a Super I had lying around and put it on my JLW, and it is quieter, but unfortunately it doesn't work with the 4 way restrictor. It's too easy to hit the corners on the Cherrys, as the acutuators are easier to move, so it makes the 4-way restrictor useless. I'll keep it mind if I do a 8-way JLW.
