Need advice on converting a cabinet
« on: September 24, 2011, 12:43:50 pm »
I was active here 5+ years ago but can't seem to get my user ID to log in, so this is a new account.

I've got a lead on a Johnny Nero cab that's dead. I'm looking to gut it and put MAME innards inside.

I have a SlikStick control panel that I wired to an iPac and used to hook into my laptop and the TV. Now I want it all in one place. My questions are:

Do cabinets typically have interchangeable control panels? I'm just wondering if I have a shot at mounting my SlikStick to this cab.

Secondly, since it has a dead system, I want to pull everything out and junk it. I know that monitors can be dangerous but I don't know what else or what PART of the monitor is dangerous. Any advice would  be appreciated.

I've got some reading to do on LCDs . I'm leaning toward that for a monitor.

Any other things I need to consider?

Thanks for any advice.

Johnny Nero?  From 2004?  It wouldn't suprise me if a game that recent used a VGA monitor.  From the pictures it looks like a 25", those can be hard to come by depending where you are.  Also you may be able to make a few bucks off the guns, since they wouldn't work with an LCD anyway.  All of this said, you may be able to use monitor already in the cabinet.

As far as control panels, you would probably have to cut a new one, but I honestly haven't seen the cabinet or the control panel so you may be able to cut a section from the cabinet to act as a "shelf" for the slickstick.

Removing the monitor is easy.  Just don't touch the electronics or stick your penis under the suction cup on the tube.  There are several capacitors on the chassis board and the tube itself that need to be discharged, it's probably best done in the cabinet.  There are plenty of videos of how to do it on youtube.  It's kind of scary the first time you discharge a high-voltage cap, but if you take the right precautions (i.e. not using your tongue to do it), you should be ok.  It only takes a screwdriver and some thick wire

Sorry, I should have said up front that I intended to dismantle this entire cabinet using only my penis. Now you're saying that's a bad idea? Please explain.

Ok seriously now... If it uses a standard VGA monitor, would it be something that would plug directly into a mobo or video card? Or would this still need some special board or adapter?  I'd love to NOT have to buy a monitor too if that's the case. Also how would it be powered?

Thanks!
