Jamma
« on: September 11, 2003, 01:31:37 pm »
Ok, After all of the help i have gotten off of the boards.  I have decided to go with Jamma.  From What I know thus far...

I need:
the jamma harness
The game itself
Power Supply
Motherboard?
and of course control board.

Did I miss anything?

Also:  I keep hearing people talk about jamma cabs....I am building my own cab and am about to start cutting.  I was just wondering why/how a cab can be jamma only....I could only assume you could fit jamma and/or a pc in any cab. So why are they called jamma cabs?

Can anyone let me see a pic of the inside of a cab using jamma?

THanks,

Mark
(sorry for being a pain)

Here's the deal with JAMMA...
It's just a standard where every game that is "JAMMA Standard" can easily be swapped into a cabinet with a JAMMA set-up.

Near the end of this thread they explain it pretty good.

If you do decide to put a computer in the cabinet, there is not need for a JAMMA set-up. (although you can do that with a J-PAC if you wish).

As ar as what you need...
You'll need the pwer supply & a few other things related to it (I'm no expert here, but there are few other things you need...)
The game itself is the "motherboard" you are thinking of.

The JAMMA harness slides onto the game motherboard & all the wires weave all over the cabinet hooking to their appropriate parts (power, sound, video, controls, coin door, etc...)
I'm not a freak!...
Oh wait...
Yes I am...

JAMMA is a standard.
When a Cabinet is a JAMMA cabinet all that means is it uses nothing but the JAMMA harness to connect to the game.  Also part of that is the cabinet will be using a standard resolution arcade monitor.

SO, if you have a JAMMA cabinet to change games should only be swapping out the PCB.

Some good sites to look at.

and of course control board.

The list needs to be:
cabinet
standard resolution arcade monitor
Game pcb that is JAMMA compliant(daughter board if the game has one)
power supply
speaker (two if the game is stereo)
Under JAMMA specification, 2 players with a joystick and 3 buttons each
You don't need a coin door BUT then you will need to either set the game to freeplay or add coin buttons.

Also, in theory, you can plug and play a PC into a jamma cabinet using ArcadeVGA and J-Pac from www.ultimarc.com.

That's good.  But if this is your first JAMMA cabinet I'd get the harness from www.therealbobroberts.com.  One of the articles I posted if from him.  His harness is labelled, makes it really easy to wire.

Get the super super jamma with all the QD and connectors and wire.  If you can spring for it the DC cab kit for $60 includes the super super jamma kit and alot of other things you will need.  Make sure you get a crimper for the QDs.

basically here's the list of things you'll need after you construct your cabinet :

1 - JAMMA Harness (this is a kick --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- harness ... already has certain connectors already on it that you won't have to attach yourslf: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3241919046&category=13718)

2 - 15 Amp Power Supply (Terry sells excellent power supplies that have a multicolor LED that lets you know when your 5V is in range ... a nice feature (plus 3amp on the 12V line is good too) : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3241240238&category=13718 )

3 - Coin Door (many options here ... whatever design you fancy ... if you going to put this in a pizza place ... also think about adding a security bar ... goes over the coin box door to keep customers out if the machine isn't all that visible .. just a thought)

4 - Marquee Light (fairly straight forward ... you might need a electirc wire and wire nuts depending on what you buy)

5 - Joysticks and Buttons (Start and Player buttons)

6 - (2x) 4" 8ohm Shielded Speakers (many choices here also ... just make sure your power supply will be able to power them  ... if you not sure the 4 inchers from Happs are nice and you can go ahead and pick up the grills too)

7 - Arcade Monitor (Wells Gardner ... its and easy choice ... if you got the cash ... get a 27" WG D9200 ... you'll have the option of Standard or Medium resolution which most of the somewhat newer games use.  If you feel thats a bit more than you want to put into the machine ... then the WG K7400 is a good choice ... comes in 25" or 27" ... here's the link : http://www.wgec.com  ... plus you don't have to worry about isolation transformers and inline fuses  ;) )

8 - Electrical Supplies (Quick Disconnects (.187 and .250), Climpers, Wire Strippers, maybe a few Molex connectors with pins, Power Cord for your power supply, and a power switch so your can turn the machine off without unplugging it.  You might as well pick up an EPROM puller ... if you plan to do this for the long haul you'll learn real quick how to ROM swap.

I've tried to remember most of these stuff off the top of my head ... definitely check Bob's site out ... tons of good info there ... good place to start learning  :)

Do you realize that you can just BUY a fully working Jamma cabinet with game already installed for $100 - $200.

I seem to get the feeling that you are very confused about all of this. You should probably read a lot more before you go building anything.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I thinking he wants to build one so he'll know how to repair it if it breaks ... thats my guess

a 29" Neo Geo Candy arcade machine with a couple of bar stools for under $400 would be good to start with.

These are currently on slae at Wico (http://www.wicothesource.com).  A power supply for $19 and Buttons $0.89 a pop.  Minimum order of $25 though.  To find out more info contact Wico.

Cab DC wiring starter kit $65

It is on the list right under the cap kits towards the top.  Not very well indexed but Bob Roberts has good stuff.
