Trackball to Opti-Wiz (v1.0) Wire Question..
« on: September 12, 2011, 09:49:11 am »
Hi folks.  It's been nearly 2.5 years since I was able to work on an arcade cab and I finally got back to my portable unit and found that I stopped my wiring of the final part, a (I think, I forgot to measure it) 3in HAPP Trackball.  It's the type in the full coverage, smooth sided, black shell and has a Red Trans ball for illumination from below.

I will be hooking this up to my MAME PC via the GroovyGear OPTI-Wiz (v1.0).  The board has a Spinner on the Z-axis currently and seems to work just fine.

My question is wiring the trackball to the board using the following wires seen coming from the unit:
x1 Yellow, x1 Green, x1 Blue, x1 Brown, x2 Red, x2 Black.

Since I am rusty as all heck on cabinets due to my long vacation, I am at a loss to understand why the trackball has the 2 Red and 2 Black wires, each combined so they become just 1 Red and 1 Black on a single connector.  I assume this is the 5v/Ground setup?  Thus leaving me the Left/Right & Up/Down to be wired via the remaining 4 different colored wires?  Just wondering which wires represent these directions and if I am correct on the Red / Black situation.

Also, am I correct that you can just measure the opening in the trackball face to determine if it's a 2.25in or 3in unit?

Any input is welcome and appreciated.

Yes, you are correct.  Each optical PCB requires it's own 5v supply, so these are split off to each from the Opti-Wiz.  The pairs are yellow/green and purple/blue.  If the trackball directions are reverse, simply connect the yellow where the green was, and vice-versa.  Same for the purple/blue pair.

Yes.  A visual should suffice.  A 2.25 is considerably smaller, basically the size of a cue ball.

Thanx Randy T.  As always, the voice of reason. :)

I guess the only issue I would have now would be where to find the little, 2-Pin connectors (molex?) that will go onto the 6 Axis Pins used by the Opti-Wiz board.

I will get to it this eve and setup this little bugger once and for all.  All I need now is my trackball mounting plate and she will finally be done after a long, silent wait in a storage unit.

Very odd setup issue since I went through the entire cabinet setup last night.

The Opti-Wiz (v1.0) seems to work just fine for its own interest.. Windows finds it, etc.

The odd point is that the Trackball, if set onto the X & Y axis of the Opti-Wiz, causes the Vortex Spinner not to be found on the Z axis.  If I set the Spinner on the X axis, then the Opti-Wiz does not see the Trackball on Y/Z.

USB conflict issue with having two devices on the same Opti-Wiz maybe?

I'm having the same issue.

I'm having the same issue.

Actually, you are not.  Your issue is related to connecting one of the trackball axes to an input already in use by the spinner.  No optical interface will deal with optical devices connected in this manner, as they will interfere with one another.
