Newbie Questions
« on: August 20, 2011, 10:46:07 am »
I've been lurking for sometime on this site.  I've almost completed my first MAME build.  Many thanks to all of you for all your posts.  They've gotten me through most of my build with ease.  I have a few questions I'm hoping I can get some help with.  I've searched the forum and can't seem to find any answers.

- I've got an Electric Ice-T Trackball that doesn't seem to work.  That, of course, is probably because I don't know how to hook it up.  It came with a small circuit board and three wires that I think are supposed to be labeled.  I know they're supposed to be for the X, Y and Z axis but I'll be damned if I can figure out the instructions that came with it.  1st question "How do you wire it to the circuit board?".  There's mention of potentially requiring 5v power but it didn't come with a power cable.  When I ordered it from GGG there was the option for USB device number 1-4.  I chose 1 (Use if FIRST or ONLY of this exact controller) hopefully that wasn't a mistake.

- I've also got an LEDWiz and PacLED64 working with LedBlinky.  The LED's (UltraLux buttons) work fine it's just that when I try to get the audio configured I get an 'invalid audio device' error from the software and no devices to choose from within the interface.  The PC I'm using is a Gateway GM5442 with built-in audio.  The audio works fine within Windows 7, games work through Hyperspin but LEDBlinky doesn't seem to recognize it.

Many thanks for any help and again thank you for all the great input and feedback on this forum it's made my first build a total success thus far.

OK,,, fixed my trackball issue.  Cables were not labeled correctly however I finally figured out that the red and black cable were power and the other two I could just test on the fly.  Thank you trial and error.  Now if I can just figure out the audio issue.

Update your sound drivers and reinstall the latest DirectX to start out.

What's going on is that your "Soundcard" is probably a software implementation,  or at least partially software based,  and LEDBlinky can't find it because it's expecting hardware.  Redoing the drivers and DirectX might generate an interface that LEDBlinky can find.

Thanks for the reply.  I've fixed my audio issue.  Bought a cheap RocketFish soundcard and all is right with the world.

Thanks again.

Follow up question regarding this issue.  I am having the same issue with my built-in audio.  I have a space limitation and cannot add a regular sound card.
Does anyone know if one of those cheap USB sound cards would do the trick?

LEDBlinky should work with the on-board audio from the motherboard. Try this; Right click the volume icon in the system tray and select "Recording Device". Select the "Sound Recording" tab. Do you see and devices listed? If not, right click on any blank area and select "Show Disabled Devices". This should then add a device that may be called "Stereo Mix" or "What You Hear". Right click the new device and select "Enable". If selecting "Show Disabled Devices" still does not list anything, you may need to update the motherboard audio drivers.

As for the USB sound cards, I would think that should work.
