Why 14 buttons?
« on: August 17, 2011, 11:37:36 pm »
New user and doing some reseach so I'll probably start several threads before plugging in the saw and drill. I'm sure most of these have been asked before so please bear with me.

The question for this thread is why 14 buttons with most of the joystick/button bundles on eBay?

I know that I can set them up in any configuration I like, but since most of the packages had 14 buttons there must be some standard configuration they're geared for.

Something like six buttons with each joystick plus two player start buttons seems reasonable until you consider there's no coin buttons or any control buttons for pause, enter, or exit.

Four buttons per stick plus two sets of coin/play leaves two for control. I just haven't seen a lot of panels with only 4 buttons per player.

So is there a 'standard' configuration?

Thanks!

a common control panel layout is to have a seven buttons per player.
the idea is to have six buttons (2 rows of 3) per player for a typical street fighter layout but then have the extra button in line with one of the rows for a neo-geo friendly layout.

heres an example:

Neo geo or MK3's run button. I actually use the seventh button for turbo in nba jam games.

stop stealing my answer :)

also, I dont use the top row for my jamma (3 button) games, I use the ABC of the "neo geo" row, its just better that way.

The reason for no coin buttons:
a)we use coin mechs
b)with an Ipac you can hold start and push button 1 for a credit

The reason for no exit button:
you can hold P1 start and push P2 start(IPAC)

The reason for no enter button:
most front ends use P1 start as enter

The reason for no pause button:
you can hold P1 start and push down to pause (IPAC)

I mentioned IPACs because thats what I have, Im sure other encoders have the same/very similar options. MGB posted a frankenpanel, if you want a better idea of what people here use (both good and bad) check out the control panel picture thread.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.
