Arcade Trouble! - Need Help Plz.

Okay here's my problem,

My house flooded a few weeks ago, my cabinet saw a 1/2 inch of water and soaked some up into the particle board, but all was ok and it was unplugged at the time total exposure to water was probably 48 hours tops and very little would have touched the PSU.

Fast forward to now, I plugged the machine in for the first time after making sure everything was bone dry and it worked fine for 4 hours, then suddenly a loss of all display functionality. I can power it up and the marquee lights up and I can hear the static around the monitor in the back building up as it did before so the monitor appears to be ok. (I think). I should add that when I turn off the power I get the flash of white light to the center of the monitor so that makes me feel a little more okay considering I don't think that's killed.

I am curious if the Jamma board is dead, or if the PSU killed something internal, or there's a solenoid looking thing that was VERY hot to touch when I took the back off to check things out.

Does anyone know what might be done to troubleshoot this or what I can do to fix it? If someone has a jamma board they would unload for cheap so I could test I would really appreciate it.

Well from you say, it sounds like the monitor may be fine. More than likely either the power supply or game board are shot.

Have you tried metering the power to you board (5v)? meter it at the board, not at the power supply and make sure its around 5.1 volts or so.

There are a lot of cheap jamma boards on ebay.
Where are you located, maybe someone here can let you borrow a board for testing.

+1 on metering at the board.

Was the game moved around at all?
I would check and make sure the video cable from JAMMA harness to monitor chassis is seated properly. And also the JAMMA harness edge connector to game board is snug.

Checked connection, seems ok.

Not sure where supposed to go to meter the board. I attached some pictures below in case these help.

Solenoid looking thing - was very hot to touch when machine died.

My wife just lost her job so I won't be working on spending money to fix it anytime soon, but if anyone had any ideas I would be certainly interested in trying.

To meter for the voltages on your, go to the jamma connector plugged into the board, shown in your top photo at the bottom of the pic.

The two black wires (terms 1 & 2) are the negitive (or ground)
The two red wires (terms 3 & 4) are +5v
Terminal 5 (white, I think) is -5v
The yellow wire (terminal 6) is +12v

bassically you just want to set your meter for dc voltage and put your black meter lead on one of those black wire connectors, you can touch the lead to the pad just the other side of the jamma connector.
then just touch your red meter lead to the +5v pad and see if you are getting 5volts and then do the same for the other voltages.

my bet is that your power supply (shown in middle picture) is shot. If it got wet, it probably got damaged. even if it dried out.

The solenoid looking thing in your last pic, is the isolation transformer for the monitor. it sounds like it is fine because your monitor is obviously getting power if your seeing that whait collapse when shutting it down.

Great and many thanks, are there any good tutorials / advice for swapping the PSU?

My wife lost her job so I am in no hurry to get this fixed up and all going since I'm still trying to figure out how to just pay the bills. Thanks much! -Mike

You could find aother psu like that where its an easy swap out or you can replace it with another switching power supply.

what you have is a 150w, pc style psu. You can replace it with a typical arcade power supply like this:

but you will have to make provisions to make the those ac lines through to your isolation transformer, and you would have to match up the power lines to you jamma harness.

as far as resources go, look at www.therealbobroberts.net for some good articles on wiring.
google "jamma pinout" for info on what terminal is what on your jamma harness at the board.

Replacement PSUs are typically 20-30 dollars with some of the pc style ones being 40-50 dollars.
maybe you can post a wanted thread in the buy/sell section here, and find a used one cheap. you'd be best to look for the same one you got.

If your game plays blind (you hear it playing after coining up but don't see it) then your monitor may be the problem.
Is your monitor ticking? You may have a blown flyback, HOT or both.
I wonder if you have a u2000 in there

It sounds like the monitor is ticking but I also don't hear anything else starting up i.e. no marquee lights or sounds. But I suppose I should start a new thread for this eh?
Well if the OP does have an update that would be cool I will follow this thread to see where it goes.
