U360's with Joy2key, potential problems?
« on: August 14, 2011, 02:06:54 pm »
Hi, I'm in the process of getting everything ready in my cabinet.  Hardware side of things pretty much done (thankfully).

I'm primarily going to be running Hyperspin with Mame and all the usual consoles but would also like to setup a collection of PC only games running through this.

For instance, I have Raiden III which by looking at it, I will need to use Joy2key?

If I use this, is this then going to cause configuration problems with other emulators/my front end?

I don't need Joy2Key (or in my XP64 system, Xpadder) to run Raiden III or any other Taito Type X game. Typex_config will actually read the U360 and my Minipac buttons separately.

However, the one place I run into a problem with a PC game is Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. I didn't hook in the optional U360 harness into my buttons, but that would have saved me a lot of the trouble. Since I'm Minipac/U360 for each player, SSIVAE has to switch between two controllers, which makes play impossible. There has been a lot of trouble with SSFIVAE configuring controllers (even with a recent patch), but it seems to recognize the U360. If I had hooked up the harness to the buttons, it would see each as a separate, complete controller.

I don't use Hyperspin (I use MaLa - no U360 trouble there), but I did have to use Xpadder for several non-Mame emulators, like Naomi and Sega Model 2 and 3.

Hmm odd, doesn't work at all with my U360's.  I can't get any pc games working in fact but works fine with mame though.

I'll give Joy2Key a try unless anyone else has any solutions?

Edit - btw I'm purely talking about running Raiden on the windows desktop, not via Hyperspin as yet.  Haven't got that far yet :)

Raiden III doesn't work? Did you run typex_config first? One thing that took me a long time to learn with U360s was how to program it to change for various games, and how to always get it back to a default config. Of course this is the with U360 MaLa plug-in (I don't know if or what Hyperspin has as a comparable plug-in). My default config is 8-way (out of the box, the default is pure analog). That's what I use with Raiden III, and it seems to work.

Even though it's not free like Joy2Key, I think Xpadder was $10 well spent. You can program it to engage different U360 to key conversions for specific applications and it's relatively easy to use.

Thanks for the input, I think I may invest in Xpadder - sounds good, I will definately look into it.  It may save me a lot of headaches in the future.

Well, I can't see any typex_config?  I just installed the game via windows - should I be launching via this app or something?

Oh, do you have the actual PC version of Raiden III, or the Taito Type X version (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=112702.0;all)? I've been talking about the Type X version.

Yup I have the pc version only.  I could get hold of the Typex I suppose.

I bought Xpadder yesterday and had a brief look at it.  I can't seem to work out how to map diagonal keyboard movements to my joystick.  Will try again later.

If the emulator program's keyboard controls are UP-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT arrows, diagonals would be UP+LEFT, UP+RIGHT, etc. All you have to map to Xpadder is UP-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT.

Sorry I'm talking about Raiden again, so not using an emulator.

Well I can program Up/Down/Left/Right + the shooting buttons, but when it comes to playing the game it wont go diagonally at all.

Yeah, this is probably where my knowledge ends. Read the Xpadder manual. Make sure the U360 is set to 8 way or analog (not 4-way) before you play.

Okay matey, well cheers for your help anyway.  I would never have bought Xpadder if it wasn't for you

I'll have a read through the manual this eve.
