Modified TazMame Cabinet LCD Help Needed
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:12:21 am »
I've been racking my brain and I'm not sleeping at night because I can't decide what to do here.  I need your help.

I am building my third arcade cabinet and I want to go modern this time, so I found Taz's SlimMame plans and started there.  My idea was to basically do the same thing he did except get rid of the panel of 6 buttons above the control panel and leave that area open so I could mount the monitor a bit lower and rotate it (by hand) for vertical games.  I obviously need to use an LCD for this so I've been doing research for the past few months. This will be a 4 player unit so the control panel is 43 inches wide.  My dilemma is that I need a big screen so when I have 4 players on it they can all see well.  Because I have to mount the LCD lower I'm worried about the viewing angle.   The orange dotted line in my sample is my line of sight.  I think most screens would display washed out color at this angle.  I was eying up the Hanns-G 28" monitor or the I-Inc 28" one but the viewing angle is probably too bad (diagram below shows the monitor height vertically and horizontally).  No stores around me have this these monitors so unfortunately I can't go test them out to see how they look.

The other option is to just scratch going with a rotatable monitor and just get a 32" LCD TV and mount it pretty much like Taz did. (except he used a 26" i think).  TVs seem to have a much better viewing angle but I'd be sacrificing the ability to play vertical games on a much larger scale because I can't set it up to rotate (not enough clearance to turn it).  I'm putting my side view of the cabinet I made up and the sample of Taz's SlimMame for reference. I really need help on what I should do.  Any input is appreciated.
