What console games are in your MAME cabinet?
« on: August 09, 2011, 07:32:12 pm »
I was reluctant at first to put anything in my cab except for some select MAME games...but out of demand from my friends, they want to see a some NES, SNES, and genesis games in there too. I give in...

What emulated console "games" do you have in your cab?

yes...this is one of those threads...

I have:

  • Nintendo
  • Super Nintendo
  • Playstation
  • N64
  • Dreamcast

Of those, Dreamcast is my favorite, with N64 being second.

If you are going to put console games in, I woul suggest investing in a pc wireless receiver for the xbo 360. You can fun cheap knock offs on eBay for Under 20 bucks, and they work fine. Then get a couple of wireless 360 pads to play the games with. An easy, cordless solution to console gaming on any cab

I think I may have been unclear in my previous post. I am moreover asking what console-based emulated "games" you are running in your cabinet?

Well most people who have console emulators in a cabinet are not going to have only 1 or 2 games, i think you will find people will have complete sets of games for each system especially for older consoles like NES and SNES. It would be pointless for people to build an emulator cab for only a couple of games.

Console games I enjoy on my cab off the top of my head:

Dreamcast: Hydrothunder, SF Rush 2049, Sonic Adventure 2, Tony Hawk 2, Power Stone, Gauntlet Legends (all of these look fantastic on a 31kHz screen)
TG16: Download, Bonk's Revenge, Bomberman'94
SNES: Mario Kart, Super Metroid, F-Zero, Castlevania IV
PSX: Bushido Blade, Wipeout XL

From a 2-player simultaneous perspective (which is best when people are visiting), the non-MAME games that get the most play from my kids and visiting friends are..

Atari 2600 : Frogs n Flies, Combat, Fishing Derby, Freeway, Bowling
Genesis : Toe Jam n Earl, Zombies Ate my Neighbors, Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 2, Golden Axe 2, Gain Ground, NBA Action '95
(not a console, but worth mentioning) Atari 800 : Dog Daze Deluxe, Claim Jumper, The Realm of Impossibility, Spy Vs. Spy, Seawolf 2, Archon, One on One
NES : Super Mario 3, Pro Wrestling
PSX 1 : Tekken 3, Star Gladiator, Twisted Metal 2

Atari 2600
NES
Turbo Graphix
Genesis
N64

I have the Atari Jaguar, but it doesn’t work as well as I’d like.

At first I wanted to set up the PS1, but realized it wasn’t worth the energy.

I really wanted to love having them, but testing them on the Cab was the only time they were ever played.

Why would you play the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat or the Atari 2600 version of PacMan, when you have the Arcade versions?

The funny thing is that the Jaguar would be the only one that would be worth having and it’s the only one that’s not properly emulated.

It requires a powerful CPU and videocard to run well, but when it does, it's very pretty:

XBox 360 (only arcade ports)
Dreamcast (only arcade ports)
PS2
PSX

Brilliant!  Don't suppose you can optimize Pcsx2 for 4 cores?  I have a Phenom II x 4 @ 3.4 ghz (stock) and a 6570 1gb gfx card for my nearly finished cab.  I would love to be able to run some PS2 games :)

Other consoles I plan on running, will be : Dreamcast, N64, Megadrive, Snes and NES  some others I've forgotten but mainly those.

nope, pcsx II is dual core, seems like they won't be doing 4 cores anytime soon

my advice, if your main interest is making your friends happy

put all the nintendo games with all art and vids on a seperate wheel in your cab.

If you have hyperspin it's really easy shutting shutting off the Nintendo list when your friends are away. EVERYONE of all sexes, backgrounds, income, age, will love your arcade then. Everyone knows nintendo.. and there's something about seeing all that artwork that makes ppl feel super nastalgic. Check out the video below, I know it shows the NES list on there, but I can't seem to find it. I think having a whole list of nes games is better than just a few. Everyone had mario, but a lot of ppl had weird games that their parents bought them (because it was cheap) that holds nostalgic value to only them.

And don't forget that if you want to play games like Gauntlet Legends and NFL Blitz, the Dreamcast emulations of those games blows the MAME emulations out of the water, performance-wise.

One of the reasons why I love my Dreamcast emu.

Does anyone have a Dreamcast emulator that run shooter games like Ikaruga @100%? If so, can you please provide your PC specs? I have Dreamcasts hooked up to 2 of my cabs but I don't like using VGA switchboxes (loss of quality) or physically changing the cables. Thanks in advance.

What Dreamcast emu are you using/version number out of interest?

I've got a couple but as yet haven't been able to test them properly.

just search "nulldc" and "google code"

the first link will take you to the best dreamcast emulator, you just need to put the bios in the right folder.

I've got NullDC and Chankcast, I thought maybe there might have been a newer one.

Chankast has been dead for a long while, the active nulldc emulators are nulldc, makaron, and demul.  I've had the best luck with nulldc.

*edit*

By the way, if your pc can handle it, i'd recommend Tatsunoko vs Capcom via the Wii emulator

I originally had grand plans to put all my favorite console games on my cabinet, but I've had the thing up and running for months now with only MAME and haven't had the slightest urge to go through the hassle of setting up the other emulators.

I mean, I suppose there is novelty value to playing a game you haven't seen since you were a kid, but what it boils down to is that I just don't think playing NES Ice Hockey on a MAME cabinet would be all that fun.  When I played it as a kid, I was sitting on a couch with a control pad in my hands, not standing at a cabinet mashing big white buttons.

If I want to play console games on an emulator, I actually prefer to just sit at my computer desk with a USB joypad and desktop PC.

Everybody has said what they have, but does anybody honestly play console games on their cab for more than a minute or two?

Yes- Dreamcast especially (these are Arcade-quality games).

Yeah no problem. You can usually find the most up to date emulators at http://www.emucr.com/, I check it out once in a while just to see what's going on in the emulation scene. If you click on the news tab you can read about stuff that can now be emulated that maybe couldn't be emulated before (such as the Sega Model 3 emulator).

btw, the dolphin emulator seems to need at least a 3.4ghz duo core with a good graphics card, so it won't run on most mame PCs.

Well, I had a look on thier site and they say this for getting started with Dolphin :

" Processor: Any Fast CPU with SSE2 supported (recommended at least 2Ghz). Dual Core for speed boost."  I don't know how accurate that is - I guess higher is always better!

Any road, I've got a Phenom IIx4 @3.4 (althoug I realise only 2 cores are used) with a 65701gb for the machine - I'm gonna give it a test in a little while.

Can I map stuff to arcade buttons that would normally require a "shake" of the Wiimote then?

Yeah you can, so for New Super Mario Bros you can just press a button to do the spin jump. I'd stick to platformers and fighting games though. The only annoying thing is that different games have different control setups. Some use just the wiimote, some wiimote and nunchuck, and yet others require a classic or gamecube controller to have full access to all buttons. I don't think the emulator saves settings for specific games. That batman beat 'em up game is pretty good for arcades too.
