Google Music Anyone?
« on: August 05, 2011, 01:04:27 pm »
http://music.google.com/

I have been using Google music for a month now. For those who are unaware, it is pretty much free cloud storage for music that you can play back via internet browser. Overall, it has been pretty nice that I can listen to my entire music library at work. No library size limit, but a limit of 20,000 songs.

It is also nice that it is worry free music storage, I fragged my whole mp3 collection twice now, which is not a huge deal since I have most my music on CD, but it is a pain ripping the CD's to mp3.

To get my major complaints out - The player is lacking in options, the upload tool is slow, and album art randomly disappears in the transition. There is also no options yet to play on devices other than android devices. I would love to have my collection on my PS3 or Wii without taking up HDD space. However, it is still in beta stage right now.

Right now, getting Google music is by a "request access and wait" system or by invite from a current member.

I have only a couple invites to give out, so let me know if you would like access.

I have it, and it's very nice for peace of mind.  I actually don't have a lot of use for it, though, since I can only use it from my computer, which already has access to my whole music library.  I have occasionally used it on my iPad, but the lack of a native app makes it a giant pita.  The web app is not optimized for tablets (at least not Apple tablets).

I also have a couple invites, though.

So just to clarify,
This is remote drive space to store music files that you can then play from different PC's/devices?  Pretty cool.  Can upload the songs from my iPod and play from my Arcade cab or Work PC, yes?

If so, I'll take an invite? :)

Yes, it is remote drive space to play from different PC's through web browser. Device support is limited to Android devices though.

As far as I know, you can directly upload from your ipod, but you can get download program to download your ipod music back to your computer, and then you can upload that music to google music.

I can send you an invite, Rando. Just PM me the email address you want me to send the invite to.

I've used Amazon's cloud service for a few months and it is a nice option to have.  When I buy music from Amazon they put it in my Cloud account automatically.  I can download to iTunes from there if I like.

So can you DL the songs once they are uploaded?  How about creating a BYOAC account and we can all "borrow" each other's stuff?  Or does that not work?  Seems too good to be true...

I actually had three and just used one.  I had just two the other day when the invites started being available to be sent.  Looks like they are letting more and more people in.

Two left if anyone wants in.  PM me.

Anyone know if they cross convert or store the files as they are uploaded? Just wondering if the upload affects the quality of the file any (it shouldn't if they leave the format alone).

Google leaves the files alone.  Apple actually looks at your library and only uploads the files it doesn't have in its own library.  Then when you stream they send you a really high quality file, like 256k mp3, or maybe higher, regardless of the quality of your original file.
