I would assume that's a 270-degree wheel, and not a 360?

What's the cost of this thing, pray tell?

i honestly dont like the cabs that much the this one looks nice.Saw the actual item on ebay the other day.

I think that we may move to a T.V. based system since they are so much more flexible.  Can still use a computer as well as an X-Box, PS2 or Gamecube...have interchangeable steering wheels and all!  Great Idea!

It is a 270 degree.  We have not come to a final price yet...we are still working all of that out.

P.S. your site is down half the time I try to reach it today, and when it's up it's extremely slow. The FAQ links all 404 as well.

Here's where I see some problems - and I'm looking at the ebay auction, BTW:

1. Why do some pictures show a different shaped seat than others?  The ones with the bald guy show a seat with surround (?) speakers, but the main photo and the seat options show just the seat - no speakers.  In which case, where do the surround speakers go?

2. Bad placement for the CD tray- that thing is begging to be snapped off by a knee or elbow.

3. Just a hi-low shifter? And no clutch? The steering wheel isn't even painted to match the cab - looks like it is just clamped on there.

That said, it's cool someone is making a full-size cockpit cab - I think it's a little pricey myself, but then again I'd just build my own for the fun of it.

6k. Wow, that's some nerve.

He does seem to be able to find a few marks er, customers.

That's it, I'm releasing the first $25,000.00 cabinet! What do you get for that? Exclusivity! There's has to be ONE person that'll bite? Right?
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

It's up for $5500.  Just the computer in there cost a huge hunk:

3.0 GHz Pentium 4 with 800Mhz front side bus
1024Mb Corsair Ram
120 GB 7200 RPM HD
128MB DDR GeForce FX 5200 Graphics Card with TV-Out and DVI
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital Sound Card
Creative Sound 5.1 5700 speakers with remote
16X DVD (directly under the steering unit)
Gyration Wireless keyboard and mouse (works in the air like a gun trigger)
Microsoft Windows XP Home edition

This unit is just the prototype so a lot of your concerns we have already addressed.  The unit will come with a real racing seat instead of the molded one pictured.  The back of the unit will flare up so that speakers can still be added.  It will also come with a little different configuration on the steering column and the speed shifter may be taken out as well since there are shifter paddles on the steering unit.

At that price we are not making a whole lot of profit.  This is a do-it-yourself website...you guys know what you are talking about and that is why I post...not for business.  I want your honest opinions on layouts and what you think would improve it.  I don't take any comments to heart and actually prefer to get the srtaight shot!

thanks,
G

.... actually I think its priced reasonable.

probably got $3000 in computer hardware alone ... then you add in materials, labor, design, artwork, top of the line gaming hardware  ... well that pushes the cost up to around $5000+.

You also got to remember that Custom Arcades isn't building these for the do-it-yourselfer.  I imagine their catering to a higher end cliental with money to burn and just looking for machines to round out there expensive gamerooms.  So $5000 or $6000 is just a drop in the hat for these folks.

... that just my two cents  ;D

hmmm... an overpriced, overkill pentium with a gig of ram with an underpowered, bottom of the pile video card  :o ??? ::).
and a SB live of all things ???

how about a 2gig AMD, 512 ram, and a 9500/9600 ATI (actually i would only use an 8500/9100 for that matter, this is not high res stuff we are talking about) and technically, for the application, a 120gig drive is overkill as well.
then toss in a 60gig drive and use an nforce2 board with onboard 5.1, lan, etc.

and this is just me of course, im sure no business would do this, but you can get real car seats out of junkyards in perfect condition for cheap. im a honda buff and the old prelude seats can be had for $50 which have shoulder support, lumbar support, and of course recline. a lot more comfortable than any racing seat. i dont think anyone wants there --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- hurting for the sake of realism. del sol seats are nice as well, but they are a bit in demand.

anyway, ive been working on my own driving cab design and this got me rambling....

6000$ and no motion ?!  : P

Why make such a static cab when you could make a motion simulator with less
mass, and probably less cost - as well as adding more excitement value?

Id buy a motion kit if resonalbly priced and with fast responce and decent degree of motion.

I was thinking someone should make a selenoid hybrid that looks like a hydralic, but inside has mag-lev train technology - where there are many mini magnets in the cylinder that propell the thing back or forth in accurate degree spots. (but at much faster rates than air or hydrolics)

As it is... if I was going to make a driving chair, Im sure i could at very least make some sort of dryer motor drivin motion feedback.  How hard could it be...

I think you'd be much better off going after the console market, PC racing is pretty much a dead genre these days and I don't see it improving anytime soon. Doing so would eliminate a large chunk of the  cost and make them more appealing to a larger audience.

On the seat issue, you should hook up with a Sparco distributor and offer a range of different seats. That way the guys that want heated leather sports car seats can have them, and the guys that want carbon fiber racing seats can have them too.

That is what I was trying to convince my partners of today.  At least if there is a TV in there you have the choice of going with a console or PC game...99 times out of 100 your going to go with the console!

Especially if you want to play anything new. Almost all of the racing games that get released for PC have been out on PS2 and Xbox for 6 months to a year. Even Papyrus has abandoned the PC in favor of the console market.

I think they get the fact that we are not the target market (the DIY'rs here) but if they are looking for practical design and control layout info they've come to the right place.  Anything I say is just constructive criticism.

I agree Tailgunner - go the console route.  At the least an xbox has cutting edge games and only costs 180$ + speakers as opposed to $2500 CPU.  A huge CPU just seems like overkill for playing racing games.  Why not outfit it with that MC univesal wheel and advertise it as "just add modern console of your choice"?

If you can drop a TV in there like you are talking about and have an option for consoles only with no computer, I think that would be the best bet. You'd have a universal design, same TV, etc. Just yank the computer out of the console only models and you're golden.

And on another note, seeing as how that's easily a $2000 computer, prolly even more, the price drop would definitely yield you manyyyyyyyy more prospective customers. Maybe even have an xbox package, or a ps2 package, etc. There would be no upkeep on your end other than having the systems available. Other than that, you can train a chimp to hook the system up to the TV  :P

^ yes the act labs shifter

dont use tv use transcoder on the existing monitors take the component which will change it to rgb or vga (depending on console's output)

and yes ditch the pc's why not crack open an xbox and mount the dvd rom in a nice place and put the rest of it somewhere invisible

if ps2 screw accesibility stick in gt3 and bolt the thing shut untill gt4 comes around

I won't get into the fact that next to no one would pay 6000 bucks for a fancy rig for pc racing games (bah!!) when they could get a used crusin cab to mame for about the same price or less.

I will concentrate on the design though as some interesting points have been brought up.

What about a clutch?  Most if not all pc games have a clutch.

What about shifters?  Mind you you have a high/low shifter, but as it was pointed out, there aren't any pc games that use a simple high/low.  At the least they use shiftup/shiftdown.  A few even have real shift boxes.

Maybe you put it in for mame games?  In that case it's on the wrong side of the cab.  Most cabs are made in japan and thus the shifter is on the left.  If your going for an authentic feel I would really consider putting it on the other side.

Also if it's mame geared, be aware that most mame games use an optical wheel.   Those that use a 270 wheel have a clutch and/or a different shifter.
So to sum up this layout isn't particularly suited for ANY racer you can play on the pc.  I don't want to be mean about it, but shouldn't function be of some priority?

And just a general comment on the cabinet design......  Err it's kinda boxy.  I much prefer the old-school wrap-around cockpits.  At the least making the cab somewhat car shaped would be nice.  (Or putting car decals on the side instead of some lame sideart that would look much better on an upright cab.)

Obviously you've never been to a junkyard.  A person could get a nice caddie leather seat with a heater, power, massage, ect for under 100 bucks.  A local distributor used to pimp up all his racing cabs with caddie and nascar seats/steering wheels/ect.  It rocked.... much better than crappy arcade parts.

I can see why he wouldn't want to ... most people assembling cabs would get plastic arcade seats to be uniform and simple.  They can easily pass on the price - in dollars and back pain - to the consumer.  That's an awesome distributer you mentioned, though.
There is SO a spoon.

Is there any linkablility issues with a PS2 or X-Box?  Is it based on the game like a PC or is it based on the hardware?   I guess what I am trying to get to is can I have 4 of these things lined up?

With an xbox to hook 2 together all you need is a standard cat5 crossover cable. To connect up to 4 you need a standard hub with standard cat5 cables. As far as setting up networking on the xbox its as simple as plugging it in and selecting multiplayer and then system link. Their is no other configuration necessary.

The best racers out now are on consoles and it makes it so much simpler for you to build and the customer to use. I've only built a couple cabs and I've never sold one but what I've learned is if you want other people to be able to play without you holding their hand you need to make it easy, intuitive and idiot proof.

I don't agree with Howards design critiques. All the racing arcade cabs I can remember shift on the right. All the pc and console steering wheels have the shifter on the right. Americans shift on the right when we drive. My opinion is to keep the shifter on the right. Pole position shifts on the right. The boxy design is ok even though I'd prefer a enclosed cockpit that would greatly complicate and add cost to building and transporting the cab. I also think the side art in the drawing looks good but isn't on the cab in the ebay auction.

The motion idea would be a sweet one but you need to remember that the game needs to support it and there are no games that would. You could make the seat rumble like a xbox controller rumbles and that would be relatively easy and cool.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

I really don't like the enclosed cabs unless I am playing by myself.  If you are playing with other people around it is easier for everyone to see the action and get into it a little more.  Especially if I want to line 4 of these up.  Your right, it would be more difficult to build and more costly to ship.

The unit on ebay had it's pictures taken before we got the prints.  The sideart is on there now and looks awesome.

The machine does not move around when being played, but the seat deffinately rumbles under the force of the subwoofer!  You can feel the air coming out where the shifter is even.  This thing is loud and proud!
