RGB LED backlighting suggestions
« on: July 31, 2011, 11:17:24 am »
Hi All

I'm considering having a marquee made of raw MDF with a logo cut out of it.  What would be the best way to light the logo from behind? I'd prefer an rgb LED solution so I can run it through a PacLED64 so I can change the lighting effect when in attract mode.

There are 2 solutions I'm considering.
1. to cover the inside of the marquee cutout with frosted plexiglass and back light it.
2. attempt to edge light the plexiglass although not sure on how effective it would be.  Not sure of the size of the LEDs (Ultralux RGB/IL-lumination RGB 5VDC LED) and thickness of plexi required.

This raises a few questions.  Which of the 2 methods would create a good result using a minimum of LEDs? Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks

You could use something like these for the backlighting. They can be seperated into 3-LED segments (and would have to be seperated to use with the PACLED64). Each segment would use 3 terminals (4 if you gave each segment its own +) of the PACLED64, so you would be able to light 21 of those segments. Keep that in mind if you have other LEDs to light on your cab.

How much do you need? I have about 2m of KKDC RGB led strip and power supply that I don't have a use for. PSU is 240VAC input* (edited) tho.

These are all excellent suggestions. I've got the PAC64s and pushbuttons LEDs waiting for the cp to be built.  I'll be testing with these and also consider trying some strip LEDs during my tests.

I'd love to get the strip lighting off drawfull, but, I live in Aus. Shipping would be a bit pricey.

There are many different suppliers for the strip LEDs. You should be able to find someone that offers reasonable shipping, might even be able to find onein Aus.

There's a few sellers on eBay that offer global shipping.
