LCD MAME Cabs Thread
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:41:10 am »
CRT tubes will always hold a place in any old-school gamers heart, but with the current development of "HLSL" into MAME, LCD cabinets may end up being more versatile than ever.
My only concern is the space you may need to compromise for 4:3 aspect ratio.

I'm interested in seein some MAME cabs that went LCD. I'd especially like to see them in action, with your favorite game(s) running (peferably in their original aspect ratio, but whatever you got is cool).

If you have a LCD MAME cab, showcase it here!

I'd post mine,  but I'm still building it (Which I blame all of you evil people here who convinced me to graduate from a slickstik frankenpanel to a modular panel to a full blow cabinet!)

I'm interested in seeing what others have done too,  especially as I contemplate rotating the display.

This isn't a MAME cab nor a "showcase" cabinet, but I'm going to be building a 4 player MAMEcab using this cabinet style.  Rotatable 42" LCD and I'm going to see about installing a second LCD as well.

Some of the stuff I built:

The Winnitron project is cool, as it is a platform for modern arcade games. Most are resolution independent, so whether they play at 4:3, 16:10 or 16:9, it does not matter.

Since the cabs are used to showcase various platform games, they are equipped with different panels, even with XBOX controllers and keyboards.

Mines a 27" LCD so it displays 4:3 content at a full 19" tall.

I don't think you guys know what a showcase cabinet is. It's this, but with a LCD screen.

I thought he just wanted to see MAME cabs using LCD screens?
Never mind, I thought he meant the actual "showcase" cabinets. I should of read it all the way.

Lol yeah, sorry for the confusion guys, but jus for the record I meant to "showcase" your LCD MAME cabs. NOT to show off "Showcase" cabinets with LCDs. Sorry for that.

If anything, I'm actually most interested in traditional upright cabs that went LCD.

I will edit the title to avoid any confusion.

this thread is right up my alley....I'm definitely going to run an LCD in my cab.  Anyone have a 32" one mounted vertically?  In the original 3:4 aspect ratio, that should net a 26"-ish sized viewable area....   8)

Here's my rotating LCD based cab project design

This is where construction is up to

and here's a rotation test I did ages ago.

The motor I'm using is capable of faster speeds with smooth operation. I'll be testing soon.  If you'd like to see more here's the project link

Wow! That sound reminds me of our old ImageWriterII

Did you modify a matrix printer for it?

Heh heh, no, it is a stepper motor though but much stronger than a printer motor.  The unit has a holding strength of about 80 kg torque and is meant for industrial robots, CNC units etc.  The video makes it sound louder than it really is.  When I do the next series of tests it will be with the cab shell in place and at higher speeds so it will sound different again.  The gear set is from the biggest model helicopter I could find and pretty tuff. Very smooth quick turns through 90 degrees with no jolting is my goal. We'll see eh?

Attached find a pic of my rig in its current state.  It's definitely not finished yet (the big part being no artwork yet) but I finally got it functional so I've just been having fun playing it for a bit.  It's based heavily on koenig's Project MAME but with some changes to geometries and how some of the pieces fit together.  I needed something small enough to fit through doors cause I'm recently out of college and still in the apartment-hopping stage of my life.  Hope you enjoy!

It's running a 20" Dell 2001FP that is a natural 4:3 ratio and I think it works great.  I love this choice.

I'm curious to hear some thoughts about covering the unused area of a large 16:9 LCD monitor with a bezel when viewing 4:3 games.  4:3s aren't really available in larger than 19" (and even then most are 5:4s) but if you bought a 32" widescreen you could get a nice sized 4:3 image - but what do you do about the sides?

Oh yeah - Bella's Arcade uses a 19" 5:4 LCD and it works GREAT.

I'm a noob, but I seem to remember someone saying that some bling front ends have a way of displaying virtual marquees and/or game-specific control diagrams in the un-used space left over on a 16:9 screen.   ???  I wouldn't want to just cover that part of the screen up with a bezel of some kind...it'd be annoying having to take the bezel off if you ever needed to see the rest of the screen.

monitor is hann-g 28"  and 16x10 ratio. I resized the screen to 4/3ISH. very happy with the fbanext emulator's scanline filter.

I built a Knievel Woody clone with a 19" LCD.  Works fine for me.

During the build...

Pretty.

I'm curious to hear some thoughts about covering the unused area of a large 16:9 LCD monitor with a bezel when viewing 4:3 games.

Sometimes I run older versions of MAME with software scanlines, and to do that without artifacting, the scale factor is such that the image doesn't fill the screen. I find I quickly forget about it, especially deep in a game. My monitor is a 27" CRT, though. Regardless, if I were going LCD, I wouldn't go below 32"
