Issues after XP install - Help?
« on: July 28, 2011, 01:17:54 pm »
Okay, so I had my cab working PERFECT, then I decided to add a wireless adapter and have it gateway to my xbox through the LAN card.  Somewhere along the way I screwed something up and all of a sudden MAME started running s o o o  S L O W.  After futzing around with a bunch of stuff, I figured; - F-it I am going to just re-install.  Now I wipe everything out, put in a fresh XP install and now I am having these problems:

1- Ethernet card will not work.  Drivers are loaded, connects to the network, but for some reason will NOT connect to the internet.  Sends packets just fine, under packets received it says zero.  I have it plugged into my wall which is networked to a wireless router connected to my broadband cable modem.  The connection works fine.  I have it set to auto ip and auto dns.  Windows firewall is turned off.  No idea why it won't connect, it did before, and before I started with a fresh XP install as well.

2- STILL having video problems.  After doing some research, I figured my mame slowness could have been due to some messing up of the video drivers.  I am running a p4 3.0ghz and MAME .140.  My video card is a ATI Radeon 9600. Running XP SP3  I get a lot of sound stuttering and graphic slowdown. I thought it might be the drivers so I downloaded the latest drivers from AMD, the Catalyst Legacy drivers and here is my issue:  THe ATI drivers are not digitally signed, I don't really care, but I download the driver, installed it - MAME runs like garbage.  So I go to my device manager, have windows look for a driver update, it finds a DIFFERENT driver, I figure ok, I'll give that a shot. Still runs like garbage.  I figure I should be running the ATI drivers, not the one windows finds, but it really does not seem to make a difference.  MKII used to run perfect, now it stutters like crazy, frame rates are in the 70-80% range.  Thought, hey, I compiled my own mame, maybe that has something to do with it?  Found a copy of generic .140.  Same issue. I'm running MAMEUI.  I SUSPECT that somehow my MAME is not initializing Direct X properly.  Ran DXdiag. everything checks out fine with those tests.  re-downloaded Direct X.  Same issue.

SOOOO any help on:

1) getting my ethernet card up and running and

2) WTF Mame did and how do I fix it.

would be very helpful

Doesn't AMD's site show older drivers?  Pick one that's 3 or 4 back and try that.  Make sure you uninstall ALL video drivers first, reboot, then install the new ones.  If it doesn't work, pick another one.  I've got the same card as you and haven't updated drivers in a few years.  Grab something old and see if it works.

So you are saying unisntall the drivers, and instead of using the windows update driver, find an older radeon 9600 driver?

Ok, I'll try that.

Out of an abundance of frustration, I bought a 3.0ghz core 2 duo that is on its way.  Its a USFF, so it only has the onboard video and no expansion slots, so I can't upgrade it.  I am thinking for my purposes, the onboard video should be good enough.  It supports direct x 9.c. and pixel shader 3 tech.  If that doesn't work I'll just use my core 2 quad I have as my mame and use the core 2 duo as my desktop.  Still, though, I would like this thing to get off the ground, since now I have an extra computer, an extra 15 inch lcd, extra joysticks... If I can salvage this PC I'll have enough left over to make a nice bartop.

Any ideas on why the ethernet card won't play nice?

that's not much incentive to help :p

ok, Network card. Have you tried bypassing the router? have you tried using a different CAT5 cable (or plugging a different computer in at that location)? does the NIC work in another machine? you sure its pulling an IP or is it getting an APIPA?

Ignore windows update and get drivers from the manufacturer's website.

The network card is integrated into the mobo.  THe connection works, it worked fine before, i plug it into my xbox 360 and it checks out fine.  The problem is I can't receive packets for whatever reason.  I click on the connection details and it has all these packets sent, 0 packets received.

I just formatted everything (again) and re-installed xp.  See if I can get it to work.  If I can't get the ethernet up, its not a huge deal since I have a wireless adapter that I can get working, no problem.  I just need the damned thing to run Mame better than a pentium 2

Chipset drivers?  Pull up the mobo site and get everything for your particular revision?
