Analog Pedals - anyone know a good set?
« on: July 26, 2011, 05:08:27 pm »
All the analog pedal discussions seem pretty old - either from before mame supported them well or before there were many options in the marketplace.

Does anyone know of a mame compatible analog pedal that works well? (preferably usb to save on the hassle...)

I figure there must be PC pedals that work well enough...

I too am interested in the answer.

I have a Logitech G27,  I just gave it a quick test.  The wheel wasn't seen,  though it might've been a connection issue.

The pedals were seen,  but Pole Position and Outrun treated them as Joystick positions and it was really weird.  It treated them as always on,  or always off,  though I think maybe doing setup with a joystick and then pluggin in the pedals would help.  But I don't think they're being seen as analog?

I'd really be interested in some experienced answers too,  the driving thread doesn't say much about pedals :(

Guess I'll work on that then.  Didn't think there was really much to say.
As far a the G27 goes, if working properly, the pedals work fine in MAME.
You may try reducing the joystick deadzone in mame.ini and adjusting the sensitivity in the "in-game" MAME menu.
Also try setting the pedals to separate in the windows control panel.

There is some other issue though if windows isn't recognizing it as a G27.  You might try it without the pedals or shifter attached.
(if there is a problem with either, the G27 won't work, but if unplugged, the wheel will work fine without them)
...or it could just be that you don't have the proper driver installed.

What type of machine are they for?
Adding classic stand up Pole Position style to your existing cab?
Driving cab?

The only pedals I'm aware of being sold separately nowadays are high end racing $im pedals.

There are adapters available that will let you use the G25/G27 pedals as a separate USB device.  You might be able to find a cheap set from someone who upgraded, but it's still going to get pricey.  http://www.sim-sport.net/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_images.tpl&product_id=21&category_id=6&vmcchk=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=10

The cheapest plug and play route would be to buy a used PC wheel and pedal set, then hide the wheel.

If you want to add pedals to a stand up cab, I'd buy original arcade ones and wire them to an Ultimarc A-Pac.

The only standalone pedals that you might be able to find for a reasonable price are a used set of act labs pedals, but I haven't seen any in a while.

...remembered one other thing.
Not likely, but just in case.......
Don't ever map the pedals to Pedal Inc and Pedal Dec in MAME.
Those are for buttons being substituted for analogue controls.
(that might explain why the pedals are behaving as buttons)

LMAO!  That's precisely what I did!  I thought it meant pedal going down and pedal coming up,  as in establishing the range of the pedal's motion!  That explains alot!

thanks badmouth. much appreciated

your driving thread is very helpful
just a quick question if you know off the top of your head:
super sprint/championship sprint - both are listed as having analog pedals but do you know if the original cab had true analog inputs or if they were closer to digital (i.e. all or nothing)
thanks again

According to the repair manual, the pedal used a potentiometer, so it would be true analogue.
The spreadsheet linked to in the driving cab thread is based solely on repair manuals, so it should be reliable.
The column A/D under pedals is for Analogue or Digital.
(If it's a combination of the two, click on the cell and then read the full explanation in the formula bar at the top)

If you can find an old set of  CH analog Game port Rudder Pedals and run them through the Gameport-to-USB Adaptor (If you don't have the old Gameport on your PC), you should be golden.  They have a switch that switches them between rudder or gas/brake.  Mine is still going after all these years (Since Janes AH-64 Gold came out)
