4P Cocktail: Early Development Stages
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:24:43 pm »

I have been toying with the idea of a 4P machine for a while.  I have also decided that I need to get rid of my stand up machine and go for a cocktail cab….mostly because I feel it looks better overall than a tall, behemoth, ominous, black cabinet in my family room.  I plan on making it out of birch to match the bar I recently finished building.

I have an early animation of what I am planning on doing as well as more up to date design of how the control panels will work.

Watch the video and look at the early stages of development/design ideas and please give me some feedback.

Thanks

FYI – I used the sketchy physics plugin for sketchup to get the motion in the video and fraps to capture the animation.

I love it!!!
My only concern is getting 4 chairs in that small space
the video where the sides only rotate out about 60º looks like it might work better and give you some more space

here is a quick sketch, I know things aren't to scale or proportion but I think you can get the idea

as you can see I really liked the take off of your idea and wanted to see if it could work
so this is a little more flushed out... but not much
oh..  and you could add a subtle curve to the whole CP and round the corners a little and shrink the base
might be a bit modern looking for the your living room but man it is a fun concept to play with

As of right now, the drawings scale my CP layout as 4' wide in "4p mode".  I am also a bit concerned about stools being too close.  I recently made a trip with my 2 kids and wife to a large arcade/game place and made everyone stand shoulder to shoulder at every 4p game they had.  Some were definately tight, but the CP's that were closer to the 4' wide width were ok.

I say "ok", cause my fat ass felt a little cramped, but the wife and kids said it felt alright.  I do like the angled idea and what I was originally going for....but was having a hard time making the geometry work...however, you got it pretty good really fast.

Time to go back to the drafting board, and thanks for the input.

problems:

1 - you can't compare it to a stand-up 4p because of the angles involved and the fact that people are sitting.  At 4 foot you are looking at 4 chairs, a foot wide touching each other.  Most chairs are in the 18 inch plus range, so it will be a challenge to physically fit a seating area.  Solution?  Maybe benches?.....

2- Looks like you are using a LCD screen.  Get an IPS or VA screen or the whole things will look like garbage.  Solution: lots of cash and due diligence...

IPS is an LCD technology which gives good viewing angles.

And while I don't see "VA" listed as an LCD type there is MVA and PVA which I assume can be lumped into a "VA" category...

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen
