To MAME or not to MAME... Joust Cocktail
« on: September 05, 2003, 12:23:40 pm »
I found a Joust Cocktail cab, cheap.  It has No monitor, no pcbs, no harness, and 3 buttons per side.  I guess it has been converted to something else.  Joust only uses 1 button (duh  :))  So what do I do?

My plan is to convert into a KI/KI2 machine with a Jamma switch (not MAME!  sorry for the misleading title  :-\).  Should I do it or leave the cab for someone who wants to restore it to it's orginal glory!  What do you guys think?

well you can restore the cab if you want atleast the outside of it but I would MAME it.  Then if you want to get rid of it you could sell it as a refrerbed joust cab that needs its insides.. Just my thoughts but I would def. mame it.

Or you could just hook me up! ;)
(I'm in Arlington)...

That would be a great fighter cab...
Eh... If it's what you want, I say convert it.
Just don't do anything that would prevent it from being able to be changed back to the original Joust.  That way it can still be worth a few pennies later if some one wants to restore it.

Or like I said... you could just leave it for me. (If the price were right...) :P

Where did you find it anyhow? I've been lookin for local venders etc... for stuff, but all I've found is a guy that'll charge me the same as Happ prices. (eh... I guess I don't pay shipping that way...)

Good luck getting both sets of hardware in there, most cocktails are so cramped that it is hard to get one boardset in, let alone two.

I thought about that, but the Joust cocktail isn't anything like the other cocktail cabs.  I think there is enough room.  Maybe stack the PCB's.  There's always a way.  ;)

I will have to ship it, but I love that cab.  If the shipping is right the cab is only $50 so it wouldn't be to bad.  As for local vendors, I'm in the same boat.  I can't find any good local vendors.  Actually, I haven't found any!  Off topic:  Do you know of any places around here to get a MAMEable cab!  I missed the last auction and don't want to wait until October for the next one.

Well...
The one guy I know is in South Arlington (Cointech in the phone book).
I've talked to him about getting an empty cab before & he said that when he comes across one that's not worth converting or fixing he'd sell it for $20-$100 ($20 for defender style, $100 for Larger 25"+ Midway styles). He said they'd be empy & might still have the coin door.

Here's his stuff on ebay right now... (Not much right now though)...

You could probably use the "Ask Seller a question" (click on his ID in the above page) to get in contact with him. Or just look him up in the yellow pages under "Vendors" I think...

This must be the cocktail that was available for $51.34 or something, right?

That's the one.  There aren't really that many around.  Would make a good project I think.  tmasman is right.  The first thing I thought when I saw this style of cab was "That'd be great for fighting games!".  ;D

BTW:  Thanks for the info tmasman!  I'll check him out.
