Quick question! Re: Cocktail cabs
« on: July 08, 2011, 12:05:30 pm »
Just about to buy a cocktail cab and wondered what was best to get with it - Perspex or Glass top?

I like the idea of a glass top but it's double the price.  Just thinking if it's not that much difference, I may go with the Perspex.

Just realised you lot call it Plexi/Lexan, which explains why my search threw up nothing.

Okay so did a search for that, seems to be divided between the two.  Think I'll just go with Plexi and then look into glass along the way.  I have no idea what the quality of the glass is, so will probs go with someone more local for that rather than having it shipped.

Tempered glass is nicest, and scratch resistant.  Plexi is cheaper, but when I've used it the static build up on it bugged me.  It can also scratch much easier.

Thanks, yeah good point.  Didn't think about static, that could well bug me too.

I have no idea whether the glass he ships is tempered, have sent a message but think I won't see a reply until after the weekend.  I take it normal glass isn't an option?  It's not likely to get smashed or anything.

i usually go with floatglas with polished edges for replacing damaged arcadeglas and some of my homebrew builds . its no more expensive than plexi and a 8-10 mm could take some beating ( a 50x50 cm 6 mm floatglas / polished is about 15-20 euro here ) . as long u dont jump in or hit it with a hammer u shouldnt have any problem .  ill take the plexistuff only projects where weight is an issue , like bartops. i would only consider using tempered glas if my home arcade is daily swarmed up with drunken idiots. static , scratches and cleaning ( no alcohol on acrylic !) makes plexi less attractive than glas .

Thanks for your reply.  Well he got back to me quicker than expected and said the glass is indeed safety.  Sent me a picture with some standard bezel which is included - I'm not keen but guess I can take it off/add my own in future.  Gonna go with the glass  :)
