It should work with any emulator that has mouse support.  That being said, certain emulators (M2) don't work with 2 guns because of how they implement multimouse input.

Some emulators are also weird with absolute inputs.  ZSNES for example won't work with Aimtrak when it's in full screen.

That's not much of a list.  :lol
Whether it is worth it or not depends on how much you like gun games.

Download the AIM-Trak setup guide just above the picture of the board.
http://www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html
All MAME gun games are listed there.

Then you have the PC version of the American Laser arcade games from Digital Leisure:
http://www.digitalleisure.com/contents/pcCDRom_games.htm
(find them a lot cheaper on fleabay or elswhere)

Nebulas Model 2 emulator plays House of the Dead, Virtual Cop 1 & 2, Behind Enemy Lines, Gunblade NY, & Rail Chase 2.
(but only 1 player)

Demul plays a half dozen or so including Maze of Kings & House of the Dead 2 if you have a fast PC (don't remember the rest).
(again, 1 player only and integration into a front end can be a PITA)

There are also a bunch of online flash games, but I've never messed with them.

I've been using old Act Labs ray guns for the past year.

I bought an AIM-Trak & a happ recoil gun to install it in, but haven't had time to work on it yet.
If only I could do it at work instead of just hanging out on BYOAC all day.

You can build aimtraks pretty cheap if you put them in your own shell.  They can be finicky to calibrate, but they work well.  If you are using a LCD screen, they are pretty much your only option other than topguns, and topguns are more pricey and not as good since they require these huge light bars to be mounted to the outside of your cab, and they need to be used at a greater distance.

If you have a CRT, then its either aimtraks or act labs guns, you will find the same isssues with both as far as I know, for example, M2 doesn't work with any 2 guns as far as I know.

Depends on which gun games you really like.  Duck hunt s good for the nostalgia, but its not really that fun to play.  THe point blank series of games are really fun.  Carnevil doesn't run well unless you have a good rig.  The time crisis games don't run well. HOTD runs in M2, but only one player, and no offscreen reload.

To me its worth it for the point blank games

I think there are more games that are fun to play that use guns than ones that use a trackball, but hey, to each his own!
Area 51
HOTD
Maximum Force
Police Trainer
Point Blank
Point Blank 2
Zero Point
zero point 2
Vs. Duck Hunt
egg venture
who dunit

Adding to Donkbacas list:

Terminator 2
Revolution X
Alien 3: The Gun
CarnEvil
Big Buck Hunter (PC)
Operation Wolf 1-3
Lethal Enforcers 1 & 2
Mobile Suit Gundam: Final Shooting
Steel Gunner 1 & 2
Mechanized Attack

NES Light Gun games
SNES Super Scope games

There's plenty of other decent ones too. It's really up to you if it's worth it.  I bought 2 Aimtraks and glad I'm I did.

That's a shame about Time Crisis - I hadn't tried it but I hoped it would play smoothly.

So you can't reload offscreen with HOTD? I thought you could do this with the Aimtrack...

Also, another game not mentioned is Crypt Killer.

It's an all right game from what I remember but not amazing. I ran it for about 2 minutes to see how it runs, and it seemed to be fine. Anybody found it to be different from this?

HOTD runs fine, its not a aimtrak issue, its an M2 issue, if you shoot off screen, the gun reloads, but at some point the game will crash.  It has something to do with how M2 displays full screen, its not really full screen, but its like a really big window, so if you shoot off screen, sometimes the game will minimize.  So if you play it, one player, and have one button for shoot and another for reload.

It depends on how much you like light gun games, but I feel there are plenty of LG games to justify adding aimtraks, ymmv.

Curious about Time Crisis comments.  I've tried Time Crisis 1 (MAME) a bit and it seems to work fine.  Does it mess up in later levels?

Not to get off topic to bad.
I find it crazily amazing I'm the only 1 that has successfully managed to get
both guns working in M2 Emulator. I had this conversation with a member a
while back by PM. If I had someway to capture a video of this I would defiantly
post it! I see more and more people saying that it wont work with 2 guns...
but I'm telling you I have been having a blast with House of the Dead on M2.

I don't know if I managed to get a certain version of Aimtracks that works
with both guns or what is going on. However there are Aimtracks that work with 2
guns on M2 because I have been using them just fine.

Now granted there is problem with off screen reload and shooting in the wrong place
and closing the program.

I just use a button to reload and try to avoid shooting edges.

I realize that everyone is probably going to say I'm full of it.
I don't have a camcorder or access to anything like that.
However if anyone can think of a way for me to prove this to you I gladly will.

Post your M2 config file if it's handy.
Are you running "The Troubleshooter" software?

I'm currently using act labs guns, but I plan to switch to AIM-Traks.

You're full of it!  ;)

Both my guns work but only for player one.  Are you positive that the second gun is for the second player and not just duplicating the first player?  Also, let us know what options you have in the Aimtrak program (emulate joystick, emulate mouse, etc).

I have a prior version of Aimtrack software installed so no joystick option.
( I don't dare update and chance loosing second gun!)
I do run trouble shooter as a background service for house of the Dead 2.

I have a niece that sits in with to play house of the Dead quite often.
Whether its duplicating or not.. Player 2 works just fine.
I can see both cursors on screen. There not quite displayed at exactly
the same time ( maybe a second off. barely noticable in game)
I noticed when I took several snaps with paintshop.

I was asked for my .ini file here it is:

Looking at the code above I'm even more confused as to why my set up works and
others don't. Rawinput appears to not even be set.

Like I said before it works. I don't dare change a thing!

Thanks for posting that.
That blows any theory I had out of the water!  :o

That Model 2 cfg file doesn't have the widescreen option, so it's not from V1.0
Most here have probably used v0.9
Is that an even older build?

If you're not sure, launch M2, then click the help tab and about.

I am not sure what you mean by relative mode. If you mean like a normal mouse, in which the device sends a displacement figure when moved, rather than an XY location, I don't see how this can be applicable to a gun device, it just is not relevant at all, the control would just be impossible to use.

Yeah.  It's the only way I've ever gotten two mice to work on the Model 2 emulator.

Re-reading "The Troubleshooter" pages, the gun is still sending absolute data.
http://thetroubleshooter.home.mindspring.com/howitworks.htm
(and M2 isn't supported)

This topic always drives me nuts.
I feel like there has to be some kind of workaround, but I know others have spent countless hours on it and came up empty.
....and then TeutonicDarkness comes along and claims to have it working right out of the box.....

Hey I have had act lab guns before and toyed with all this just like the next
person. I really want to understand why my setup works and others don't.

But it appears that time is slowly running out..

I have 2 pcs running using a KVM switch to toggle between regular pc
or MAME PC. My MAME PC is starting to crash. Maybe 1 out of 20 tries will
it start and I havn't found the problem. My Shelled Windows XP just
crashes and shuts down the PC.

To make it worse.. I can't duplicate the 2 guns on my regular pc.

This is why I want to know too!

Maybe something special about that PC chips motherboard in my MAME PC?
Could the KVM switch be doing something?

I know its really going to stink going back to 1 gun!  :(

HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2

- is now playable in MAME!

Apparently... I'm wondering what people's experiences are like playing this in MAME. I think it may be one of those games that require a top of the range computer to run it well.
