dwjukebox - Photoskin with spinning jukebox 'animation'
« on: June 20, 2011, 10:46:25 pm »

The link shows my near finished effort at adding an animated turntable to my skin.  Thanks to fellow-dwjukebox user TED over on the developer's site forum for suggesting this and working with me to make it a reality.  It's not perfect, but it is pretty cool, IMHO.

The screen was captured with CAMSTUDIO, which apparently has some trouble capturing a widescreen display.  There's no sound, either.  But here's what you're seeing.  I apologize for not editing out my desktop, etc...but it's late and I wanted to post this tonight.

1. Dwjukebox starts.  A user-specified image (pic1.jpg) shows up...mine is the RCA Nipper the dog with grammophone.
2. The skin comes up all the way, posting the DERM-O-DYNE sign at the top once the database of songs is loaded.
3. Coin is inserted.
4. A random song is selected.
5. The needle-making-contact .wav file starts.  At the same time, the turntable appears.
6. There's some stuttering of the turntable animation when the little .wav completes and the song itself really begins.
7.  There's some more stuttering, but eventually the animation looks *almost* acceptable.
8.  I press 'skip song' on my keypad.  The user-specified image shows up, replacing the spinning turntable.
9.  The next needle-making-contact .wav/song starts...so the turntable reappears.

The turntable only is on the screen when a song is playing.   Otherwise, the user specified image is on the screen.

I need to clean up the skin's .ini file to remove all the junk I tried out over the past few days to get this to work.  Once that is done, I would be happy to email this to anyone that wants to try it on their system.

I also would be happy to accept any 8 images of a spinning turntable playing a record that are more awesome than my own Pioneer.  My Flip Camcorder didn't do the best job, but at least I made it myself and would feel good distributing it.

I got ambitious today and cropped/pasted/squished/overlayed a record label to one of my favorite turntable pictures...a picture that I have already received permission to distribute as part of my skin from the photographer on FLICKR.

So here is the 'just about final', filmed with my camcorder, spinning a record as the music plays.  The camcorder captures the quality of the animation better than the screen capture did, anyhow.

I do want to try to add back in the flashing 'Select A Song' when credits are present and the 'ad' that fills the little square on the left when songs are playing.  But those timers may make the spinning record not spin as well.  We'll see.  I can always just make a static icon for the little ad and let the user put their own ad in there using any image they call 'ad.jpg'.  But I was really proud of that flashing 'Select A Song' when credits were present and I'd hate to see it go.

I work 12 hour shifts tomorrow and Thursday, so this is the last post on the topic for a while.  Feedback appreciated, positive or negative.

Looks good.   Nice idea for a juke.  Could not tell how smooth it was as the youtube video kept loading bits and stalling.  Probably a youtube problem when I was viewing.
