Any other folding bartops?
« on: June 20, 2011, 10:45:04 am »
Is Bender's Benderama the only example of a folding  or collapsible bartop?

I had to sell and part out my full size, but now I miss it, and am looking at building a bartop.  I really would prefer the foldable easy to store models as life with kids and a wife in a small house means space is at a premium.  I loved the benderama, I was just curious if there are any other builds as examples?

I think the taxi themed bartop with a removable control panel may be the only other one I saw.

I've seen people mount controls on the top of a briefcase that they can plug into a TV. Semi-portable.

Ah right that taxi themed one was nicely done.  I'll have to check that one out again. I remember I think it was Epyx who made a stand up cab that came apart as well.

I really like the Benderama design, as do many I'm sure, and I really think I can give it a go.

I did a cardboard mockup to get an idea of the dimensions of the build and I'm liking it so far.  This will be a 2P, 20 inch wide version of the famous build.  I changed a bit of the curvature as well on the top, and this will fold back 100 degrees instead of 90.

Playing with cardboard was actually an nice easy way to figure out what would work and what wouldn't.   I know people always recommended a cardboard mockup before and I never really bothered. With a bartop though, its a pretty quick affair to knock up and have a real old school 3D model!

Cheers :D

p.s. I picked up wood and white laminate on the way home.... it's on... well... as soon as I get time... :D

Looks Awesome! I like 100º and the 2 player ideas
feel free to ask if you have any questions

Make sure you have a lot of weight in the bottom and as little as possible in the top, so it doesn't tip over

Hey feedback from the man himself!  I've been jealous of your build since I first found it.  Mine wont be truly portable as yours is, no laptop inside.  This will be home to a mini-itx low power board, and a 22 inch lcd.

I was worried about the potential of it wanting to tip back, but I think it will be ok.  It will be made of mdf, and there is alot of weight on the front just having it be so wide.

The next stage is a mdf mockup, and I think that will determine if the 100 degrees is ok, or I will have to knock it back to 95.  It just feels like it wants to be tilted back a bit but its hard to tell for sure until i try it.
