EPS file help needed!!!!!!!!! Emergency.
« on: September 02, 2003, 03:22:56 pm »
A friend of mine has started a new job today. One of the guys there has received an EPS file. They can't open it. Is there any default windows programs that can open it? Isn't encapsulated postscript supposed to be a somewhat generic graphics format?

She could be a hero on her first day if we can figure this out.  :D

Encapsulated Postscript

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is a standard file format for importing and exporting PostScript files. It is usually a single page PostScript program that describes an illustration or entire page. The purpose of an EPS file is to be included in other pages. Sometimes EPS files are called EPSF files. EPSF simply stands for Encapsulated PostScript Format.

An EPS file can contain any combination of text, graphics and images. Since it is actually a PostScript file, it is the most versatile file format that is available. To avoid the need for a PostScript interpreter, EPS-files usually contain a small preview image that is used to visualize its content.

EPS files can be generated by all drawing applications as well as most layout applications. Image manipulation programs like Adobe PhotoShop can also save bitmap images as EPS-files. Some printer drivers are also capable of generating EPS-files as well as PostScript files.

Microsoft PhotoDraw will open it, but it doesn't come with basic windows.

GhostScript has a windows port.  I haven't used it for years... but it's free.

EPS (which is basically Postscript with bounding box info added) is one of the most sophisticated graphics file formats available and because of this not many programs properly support it.

A lot of programs that claim to import EPS actually only import the low res preview bitmap that is embedded in some EPS files.

As Lilwolf says I think your best bet would be the excellent free version of Ghostscript.

I think The Gimp (www.gimp.org) can use eps too.  Wait, nevermind, I think it only does PS.  Might have a plugin though....

Paint Shop Pro can open them, and I'd imagine Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator can as well.

Excellent!  So you'll post them tomorrow right?   :D   ::)

I was going to also suggest Photoshop LE.  I don't know if you can download that or not...  but it looks like you won't need to.  :)
