Mortal Kombat 9 Sit Down panel
« on: June 13, 2011, 09:52:15 am »
Hi guys,

I have been looking through this amazing site for info to help me with to a project I am planning.

It is a sit down fighting arcade control panel for Mortal Kombat 9 for XBox 360. I have also considered making a second panel for Super Street Fighter 4 which I will swap out depending on what game I am playing due to different button layouts. I may even look into making it flip style similar to 1UP's arcade but still in early stages of design.

The plan is to sit it in front of my couch and play it on my 50" plasma against friends and folks on Xbox Live.

I have managed to find a really talented guy who can hack wireless pads for me so my first hurdle has been cleared.

My biggest concern is my lack of wood working skills.

I was wondering if you guys could help answer a few questions I have?

1. Can you recommend a free software program that would allow me to design my sit down unit? Nothing too complicated please but something that I could send to a company to get it cut.

2. What types of Joysticks/buttons would you suggest for the Mortal Kombat panel. The Street fighter games tend to have Sanwa so I will be using them for that panel but the Mortal Kombat official arcade stick uses what looks like happs and cherry switch push buttons? I'm a bit worried that if I use Sanwa for this panel it could have a big effect on gameplay.

I am sure my list of questions will increase as i look into this more but your help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

kowal

HI
It is my MK9 setup

I prefer PSL-L CV and Wico Conical with improved actuator (original MK1 stick) or Eurojoystick (competition)
sanwa buttons is not  indispensable and jp stick sux for this game
buttons leyout is modified, smaller distances between buttons

Happs Perfect 360 are the best joysticks for fighting games, really just the best joysticks period.
http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/50608300.htm

You can print the button layout you want here.

http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html

tape it on your board. 1 ¼ drill bit for your joystick hole, 1 1/8 drill bit for your button holes. Best to use a drill press but there are other ways.

Thanks Guys

I'm thinking that the perfect 360's sound ideal for this game as I have been told they were used on MK2 cabs I also like the look of your pushbutton Kowal where did you get them from?

Does anyone know if the perfect 360's work with hacked pads and do they need extra springs putting in to make them feel more responsive? Hope that makes sense? Iv seen on another thread how they had to swap out the spring to get a better feel for fighting games.

Cheers

You can just use 1 1/8 for all the holes.

You are going to have to tap into the 5v from the 360 pad to get the p360s to work, which MIGHT be a problem if you are using wireless because I don't think there are any spots on the board where more than 3.3v is available.

As far as springs go, its all personal feel.  If you want them stiffer, just stretch out the spring a bit.

Hell I didn't even realise it needed a power source :( well there goes my wireless idea but I don't mind too much if it means I can get a better feeling stick. Thanks for the advice, everyone is so helpful here you've  assisted me no end so far. ;D

mk1 use wico
mk2 use wico/ultimate
mk3 use ultimate
umk3 use ultimate or competition

some cabs have P360 or HAPP Super but it is not standard stock stick

and P360 is not good stick for mk series
buttons is iL PSL-L CV (aka happ competition)

wico hard too find, buy competition

Wireless gets you ~3.3V MAX while wired gets you 5V as stated before.

Wico 360s came with my mk2 cab. I replaced them with happ competitions. I like them. Wicos were kinda worn and I know nothing about refurbishing joysticks. I now use competitions in my MK2, MK4, and KI2 cabs and I have no complaints.. Hope this helps

I’m using a PC power supply that turns on and off with my Xbox to power my 360’s. I am also using it to power LED lights on the cab as well. Did not even realize you could get 5v from the pad.

Thanks guys I think that the Happs competition sticks will be the way to go.

I'm pretty sure that as they are called competition they will be a quality design used for tournaments and will be very responsive?.

This will also allow for my original plan of a wireless unit. I really like the buttons you use Kowal are yours Happs competition buttons or another similar make?

I will use Sanwa for the Streetfighter panel.

I really appreciate the artwork and button layout templates you sent that has really helped me as I wasn't aware there were so many different types. Had I not seen that I would have gone with standard classic street fighter
layout but looking at it now it wasn't best design for natural hand position.

Happs competition suck... I would much rather use the Xbox controller then to try to pull off moves with those joysticks that will continually feed the game bad data because the joystick grazed and clicked 1 of the 4 switches you did not mean to click.  If you want to play any of the 4 way games on xbox live like Super Pac Man, forget about it.

That is a shame im pretty confused now with these mixed views. I wish I was in a position to try them all out by buying one of each and trying them out but can't afford to do that. Kowal I believe this may be a stick you made what joystick and buttons are these? They look really nice is this the Wico you mentioned?

Joysticks are a personal preference. If you grew up playing games in the US in the 90's, happ comps will leave you satisfied.

You will find mixed reviews on every stick out there

I really don’t see how anyone can like Happs competition sticks. It’s not about the way they feel, it’s simply the functionality of them are the worst I have ever used. Get what you pay for I guess.

Any non restricted 8 way stick isn't going to perform well in 4 way games.  He is buying sticks for mk, not packman. Most fighter fans like the comps

Hi Guys,

I will be using the controls for 2 panels Mortal Kombat 9 & Super Street Fighter 4, I wont be playing any Xbox Arcade games so wont be using any 4 way controls.

My Sanwa parts arrived yesterday I got them off EBay as a job lot (3 joysticks, ball tops and buttons) they are pre owned but seem as far as I can tell in good working order. 2 of the joysticks are bronze and one is silver, they click when pushed into all the positions, they have a series of wires coming out of the unit which is good looks like i wont have to wire it myself now, the buttons don't seem to have much if any resistance when pressed but this may just be how Sanwa buttons are? iv not had much experience with them as I am used to cherry switch push buttons. I have included some pics so you may be able to see if there are any faults?

Thanks again Kowal for the link to the push buttons I will definitely be getting the SL-CV ones for my MK9 panel they look perfect for what I need, this just leaves me with a real dilemma in relation to the joysticks. I have heard that Happs quality has really dipped in the past few years due to Chinese manufacturing plus I don't really like to look of the competition sticks.

That Fanta Korean stick you used on your stick looks amazing I really like the gloss finish but how would you rate it mate? would it play well with MK9? or is it not really used for fighting type games?

Many thanks for all your advice and help guys really appreciate your views.
