Happ -- high or low
« on: September 01, 2003, 06:06:02 pm »
I'm looking to by the 3" t-ball from Happ, but I'm a bit torn between the standard or "high" version.   From a gaming point of view, have anyone any experience playing both, if so, what's your preference?

Thanks in advance.

I think that I have used both, and that the difference has been neglible for gaming.  Sorry I cant be more helpful.

HAHA BEAT RAMPY TO THE LINK.

You might find this thread helpful.  u_rebelscum does a really good job at explaining the differences.

I recommend against the highball - I got one and sort of wish I had the other.  Haven't specifically tried the other, but the highball has some behaviors I don't like.

Specifically, if I am not careful to keep my hand flat and parallel to the panel surface, it is rather easy to cause the ball to jump up off its rollers and not register any movement.  I can also put my fingers around it, and lift it in its socket fairly easily.  The other thing is that it is quite a large bump on the surface of the panel, so whipping my hand over it really quickly is a bit uncomfortable.

It also veers to the left if I spin it straight up, no matter how I spin it.  (even spinning it up and to the right, I see the mouse cursor in windows begin moving right, then reverse direction and end up in the top left corner.)  This might be due to my slanted panel, or it might be something else.  Don't feel like unscrewing it and playing with rotating it 90 degrees and remapping my optipac pins.

Anyone with a positive highball experience feel free to refute me and say why I might be having those issues though.

Thanks,

I'll mostly play crystal castles with the TB, and I'd like to get as similar ball to the original as possible.  I'm not sure which one the org. game uses, probably a 3" high .. if anyone knows for sure. let me know.

:)

ok, I got my trackball to play a variety of games including the bowling and golf (if anyone wants to play golf on it - friends asked about it), but my main interest was marble madness.  I end up spinning the ball as fast as possible to try and race through the course.  :)

Crystall Castles used an atari trackball, which is now sold as the normal happs trackball.  Happs bought the design from atari, and the normal happs TB case is exactly the same as the original atari TB case.  I understand the optical boards are a little different from the atari boards.

FWIW, the high ball is a (semi-recent) happs alteration of the original atari design that sticks more of the ball out than the original design.  The alteration came long after Crystal Castles.
