Please help review my order?
« on: June 03, 2011, 11:20:54 am »
Hi all,
I know you can’t tell me what I should order for MY system, but looking for feedback before I press the order button.  Mostly I want to be sure that I’m not missing anything/making a silly mistake.

So here is my current order that I want to setup with Ultimarc, please review, comment, and rip where needed?  Note that I want to keep the setup simple and the layout fairly standard for a 2 player system focusing on games from the 80’s and 90’s:
Mini-Pac with harness (Keyboard is currently PS2 if that is important)
7 Red buttons (older 80’s style buttons) – 6 Action buttons and one extra for side/pinball
7 Blue buttons – 6 Action buttons and one extra for other side/pinball
2 Black buttons – Admin buttons (likely a pause and Shift)
White Player 1 button
White Player 2 button
Two 4/8 way joysticks – JLW-Sticks look like a decent option for the price, are any other special components needed to enable 4/8 way switching?
1 Blue ball top for stick above (red is default)
Trackball compatible with Mini-Pac, the smaller one seems fine if compatible

I think that’s everything I’m looking for to create a fairly standard control panel.  Assuming I have cabinet, monitor, speakers, and working PC, am I missing anything that would prevent me from functioning once installed?  I intend to have a Spinner in future but don’t need right away.

Appreciate the help!

Get a button wrench.  It makes things much easier.

Ditch the 4/8 ways and get 360s.

another vote for U360s here...

I used the 4/8 switchable sanwas on my 4P cab, and they're good, except when you have to go under the hood to switch them when a friend chooses DK, or you have to make sure they havent drifted during a heated game of street fighter.  Just got 2 360s for my new cocktail project and I'm thrilled so far. The hobby can be expensive but joystick versatility isnt the best place to cut costs

Thanks for help & input all, here is what I finalized:

Ultimarc:
2 Black leaf buttons
7 Blue leaf buttons
7 Red leaf buttons
Mini-Pac with Harness
Player 1 and Player 2 buttons
2 1/4 inch trackball with mounting plate
2 Ultrastick 360's, extra blue ball top

GroovyGear:
Faux Coin door
2 NovaGem Coin drop pushbuttons
1 Button wrench

More than I wanted to spend overall, but kept getting the same feedback on the sticks so went for it.  Build my CP box this week and hopefully have working controls by the end of the weekend.

Thanks all!

You will be happy with the 360s.  They can be configured to play almost anything.  I had two 4/8 way joysticks (switchable from above the CP - pull up on joystick and twist to move the restrictor plate).  They worked OK (for the most part - I could swear I could still hit the diagonals in 4-way mode sometimes) but NO ONE - and I mean NO ONE - ever ever ever bothered to switch no matter what game they were playing so it ended up being pointless and the games weren't controlling properly.  The 360s have been fantastic.
