Spinner Hack Encoder Wheel
« on: May 27, 2011, 04:23:14 pm »
Hi, I have an old arcade spinner that I want to hack a mouse to use it's optical sensor. My question is on the encoder wheel. Should I use the encoder wheel from the mouse, the old encoder wheel from the spinner, or do I need to make/buy my own?

If I use the mouse encoder wheel, how would I mount the encoder wheel on to the spinner shaft. The mouse encoder wheel looks kinda like this:

If I use the original encoder wheel, I noticed the teeth are much bigger, is that going to mess the optical sensor up?

I don't think using the arcade spinner encoder will mess up the optical sensor of the mouse. I'm pretty sure if you used the mouse encoder, it would just make the spinner faster than if you used the arcade encoder. If it were me, I would try it with the arcade encoder wheel first to see how it performs. But I have never done a mouse hack before.

Easiest way is to remove the receiver on the mouse board and turf the mouse encoder wheel.  The wires from the spinner attach to where the receiver was removed and to power.  This way there is no fiddling around with the mouse encoder wheel as the spinner encoder wheel is already mounted in the spinner. This is a standard mouse hack for spinner or trackball.

Thanks, everybody! Boba, I will take your advice. I thought I had seen examples of mouse encoder wheels being used, but I seemed a bit silly to try to mount the mouse encoder on the spinner. This makes sense to me.

Oh boy! I never said that.  I sad spinners were cursed, not spinner threads.  Actually I didn't even say that!  I said that spinners bring bad Karma, and not even that is a direct quote! You should at least quote me, instead not only did you misquote me, you made me misquote myself... TWICE!!

You don't know what you are talking about, in fact, you don't know what you are talking about to such an extreme degree that you have forced me to not even know what I am talking about, and what we were talking about is what I talked about.  Thanks, just thanks, now this all utter nonsense.   You are so abrasive.  I hate you.

For reals, I read the original topic and thought about posting something VERY similar to what Donk said. But I wasn't going to because I didn't want to stir the pot.
I commend your efforts Donk.

The encoder disc and the slotted opto must match. It just is that way.
