Light stay on after shutdown.
« on: May 25, 2011, 01:21:43 pm »
This weekend I finally (after one and a half year, I know not a record) finished my Mame cabinet.
But there's still one little problem. After I shutdown the machine with the
button on the computer my CP lights stay on after the rest of the system is off.
They are hooked up via a LedWiz and LedBLinky.
If I exit Hyperspin first and then shutoff the computer it does work OK.

Maybe someone can tell me how to fix this. I would like it to still be a one button affair so
my wife won't have to go through a complicated on/off procedure.

Thanks!

Many newer PC's keep USB ports powered after they are shut down. A handy feature if you dont want to boot up your PC to charge a USB device, or you want to wake your PC with a USB kb/mouse. I had the same issue when I used the +5 from a USB port to light my buttons. I just turn the power strip off after the pc shuts down. Then I have it set to always power on after power loss, so it boots up right after the strip is switched on.

You could check the BIOS to see if there is an option to not power the USB ports.

Same issue here , my bios does not allow me to turn that feature off as well, Intel motherboards, what are you gonna do right?, anyway I just unplug after use... on the bright side , my board keeps power to even the os/2 keyboard , so my ipac stays on as well as do my usb's.... so, @ least you don't have issue ;)

ps nice cab    ;D

No kidding! Beautiful cab man nice work!

Why not use a smart strip, then when the pc turns off everything else does too. Thats pretty standard stuff

Ive got the monitor, pc, marquee light, coin slot lights, LEDs, trackball LED all turn on and off with the pc, one button

I can't find the option to turn the USB power off after shutdown. I also looked in Windows XP energy saver options. No joy.

I'm actually already using a smart power strip. My speakers and TV are both turned off when the PC (which is master) turns off.
I've got the marquee powered from the 12 volt from the PC power supply which does switch off when needed.

Right now I'm just unplugging the whole thing but it's a bit difficult to reach around the cabinet when it's pushed against the wall.

P.S. thanks for the compliment Smeghead!

I'm not sure how the led-wiz works as far as voltage supply, but you could pick up the +5v straight from the pc power supply, that way it would shut off when the computer does... Just an idea.

For XP check the following.

1  Open the "Start" menu and click on "Run."
2  Type "devmgmt.msc" and press the "OK" button.
3  Open the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section of the "Device Manager" window.
4   Right-click on the first entry of the "USB Root Hub" list and select "Properties."
5   Click the "Power Management" tab and check the check box next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power," then click the "OK" button.
6    Repeat for each of the "USB Root Hub" entries present in the "Device Manager" list.

Some USB devices may not start up properly if the power is turned off to them and not restored in time when the computer is turned back on eg: USB hard drives etc.

Look for a jumper on your motherboard called USB standby power or something similar.  I think it's labeled +5VUSBSBPWR on my motherboard.  Basically, when jumpered one way, it keeps +5 volts to the usb ports even with the computer off.  When jumpered the other way, there's no power when the computer is off.

Incidentally, often there's a similar jumper for PS/2 keyboard power.  If you have a J-PAC plugged into a PS/2 port, then you want the +5 keyboard power jumper disabled too.

WOW! Solved! I found the jumper on my motherboard and by moving it the standby power to the USB ports was killed.

Thanks everybody for your help!
