Who would you do?
« on: May 24, 2011, 01:53:38 pm »
Option 1 - Reversibly MAME a locally available working PP1.  Controls and monitor/gameplay are good, no work needed.  Budget would be $800 or so.  $350~ to buy the cab, mucho labor to strip off the PP2 sideart vinyl slapped on the sides, some minor wood repair and repainting, fabricate replacement for the busted bezel/trim for shift lever, fabricate replacement for faded, sagging cardboard monitor surround, t-mold, locks, arcadeVGA board, UHID or similar, and a beater PC.  To play the 12 or so 360 degree games via Mala FE.  I would probably try to sell it after 6 months or so.  I would leave the PCB's in it, so don't burn my house down, OK?

Option 2 - Budget $400 to build an Evo style slim upright with auto rotating lcd, using my existing monitor, pc, and CP:

Option 2.  Why go through the trouble with the PP1?  If you are going to Mame something, do it to a cheap/broken machine.  Why spend 350 for a cab you are just going to mame?

I'm with Donk. You did a great job on the CP- I'd love to see what you could do with for a whole machine.

Yeah, by the time i got done typing, I was pretty much set on proceeding with the scratch build.  I do want to do an original arcade cab with stealth multigame capability, but everything that has been available lately has been either too nice to mame or basket cases.  Plus I never realized how few 360 degree wheel games were out there.

Heard in the background:  sketchup, sketchup, creditcard, creditcard . . .

 . . . Project announcement soon.   >:D

That said, go with option #2 - it's a no brainer!

How does "strip off the PP2 sideart vinyl slapped on the sides, some minor wood repair and repainting" = "Reversibly MAME" ??

:)
My projects...

Finished:  Stargate (only 'cause I got it that way)
In progress:  Tron, 48-in-1 for School Auction, DKJr (currently a 60-in-1), Millipede, MAME System

Reversibly Mame = strip the PP2 vinyl to reveal the PP1 paint and medallion that seems to be ok underneath.  It is a PP1 machine.  Wood repair- it has some chunks taken out at the edges of the side panels that look like crap.  since they are in the painted stripe area, they can be repainted.   Someone also added a coin up button over the coin door which I would remove.

Reversibly mame = that If I put a pc in there, I wouldn't remove the original equipment, the PC would be removable to reverse the change.  I thought the meaning of this was clear.

I personally don't give a @#$%^ about restoration but I know a lot around here do.   The K-lovers and many here want it all restored, but prices reflect that they will not pay the cost.  However, if I ever buy a desirable, complete machine, I will leave it as good or better than I found it.

Ok, the poll should have been:

Option 1:  Christina Hendricks as Ms. Reynolds (Saffron) in Firefly
Option 2:  Christina Hendricks as Joan/Mad Men

I personally would welcome the return of the bullet bra . . .
