Anyone streaming Blu-Rays?
« on: May 23, 2011, 09:31:50 am »
I've all of my DVDs and Blu-Rays stored on my central server.  Currently, I am streaming them to a PC or two running MCE.  I'd like to setup another spot or two and wanted to see if any of the little media players supported playing Blu-Ray rips.  I have them stored in full unencrypted directorys and I'd rather not compress them or convert them to another file type.

Anyone else streaming in this method?  What are you using to play them?

The current generation of networked media players should be able to handle them as long as your network is fast enough.  I have an old WD TV player that doesn't have a network connection but plays uncompressed rips from a hard drive just fine.

My network is fast enough and I'm hoping all of these have wired ports.  What would you consider the current generation?  The last time I started looking into this was around the WDTV came out.  Asus had a player.  iTV only does 720, IIRC.

Does the WDTV play them at the correct resolution and frequency?

How do you rip a blu-ray (uncompressed)?  Anyone got a link to a tutorial on how to set up DVDs/blu-rays for ripping and organizing them into a front-end of sorts with the cover-art, etc.?

Same way as a DVD, use an app that removes the copy protection.  Media Center is what I'm using as my "front-end".  I use mymovies to download all the content.  All I have to do now is browse the dvd/blu-ray covers, select a movie and then it starts up as if I put the movie in a dvd/blu-ray player.  It's been great for the kids.

Do you get the menus and everything too?  I haven't done it for DVDs either but I am thinking about giving it a shot later this summer for when we get our new TV room.

I have a les mis 25th ann. concert blu ray (original).

I also have a laptop, and an external blu ray drive.
However, I can't even play the blu ray...
(No, I don't need to rip it, just play would be fine...)

is there any free blu ray player software out there ?

when connected the drive and disc put in, I can explore the drive and see the files, but I simply cannot play it like on a blu ray player...

any suggsetions ?

I tried vlc, no luck. media player also no good.

Thanks,
Another Brilliant mind ruined by education....  :p

I'm not really up to date on what the current versions do or don't.  There's a WD Live and Live Plus and I think the main difference is the Plus does netflix and other popular streaming services.  I think they both have wired and wireless networking built in.  Since my old version can do 1080p and digital audio I'd assume the new ones do also.  I'd imagine players from other companies can do the same.

I don't know which players if any can handle bluray menus since I only store the feature video.  My old WD doesn't handle DVD menus, but I haven't updated the firmware in a long time so that may be outdated info.

I don't bother anymore, DVD looks good enough for me.  Heck Divx HD looks brilliant.

BR is just good for the Extras.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Yes, it's the full DVD or Blu-Ray.  I might consider taking some things out of the DVDs or BLu-Rays, but for now the whole disc(s) are there.

Looks like the Dune HD Smart players do what I want.  A little more expensive then some, but looks like there is a reason for that.
