would a cap kit fix this?
« on: May 22, 2011, 09:07:50 pm »
I have a mortal kombat 4 arcade with the origonal 25in wells gardner monitor. lately I put mortal kombat 1 pcb in the cabinet and adjusted the screen brightness to where its supposed to be. A few days later I turned on the arcade and the screen was a lil too dark. I turned up the brightness and played for a few hours and turned it off. the next day it was dark again. So I played for a little while and turned the machine back on 15 minutes later and the brightness was normal. Next day it was dark again. Would a cap kit fix this problem?

Did the brightness pot control the brightness smoothly while adjusting it? Maybe the pot is experiencing intermittent contact. :dunno
I have an issue with a vertical position pot on one of my monitors. It doesn't adjust smoothly, and occasionally the vertical position will change back and forth on its own.

Probably.  I'm also assuming that you are adjusting the brightness, and not actually turning it up every time (eventually you would run out of adjustment possibilities).  But what you are describing is indicative of an aged monitor, and a cap kit would be the first thing to try.

The next time you turn it on, and it's dark, don't adjust anything.  Just leave it to warm up, and see if it's brightness increases on it's own.  Typically when CRTs are adjusted, they are allowed to warm up for at least 45mins to an hour in order to make sure they are at their stable operating temperature.  If it has some old or dried out caps, the adjustment difference between a cold monitor and a warm one is likely to be greater.

So I opened up the arcade and found that the brightness and focus on the neck board can be adjusted but they are super insanely sensetive. I went ahead and taped them down just incase they were shaking lose. Ill let you all know what happens. If this doesnt work I guess ill have to pay someone local to install a cap kit and flyback for me. Anyone know a good place in socal to get that done?
