Super Grey, or other Viable alternatives to Graylite#14
« on: May 08, 2011, 03:47:01 am »
Is supergrey a viable alternative to Graylite#14? The production has stopped on #14 due to "economic conditions" and any material they have on hand comes at a minimum order for $100 + ?? (likely like $40) shipping. I was quoted by a local glass place that for the size glass I need I can get it in Super Grey for $60 tempered. (24"x29" sheet).

The people I talked to at grey glass said that the light going through was more like 10-12% rather than the 8% stated. I just wondered if anyone has used super grey and how it turned out, or what other alternatives (tinted glass, what kind of tint? was it done by a tinting company, or done yourself) kind of questions. I also figured a thread like this would come in useful if they are going to no longer produce Graylite#14 for the time being due to lack of demand/current economic conditions.

Thanks for the help (this is being used for the glass covering the monitor)

After trying a sample of the 14, I went with Graylite 31 instead. Great color pop, but lets enough light through to maintain great brightness without eye strain in dark rooms. I think I paid about $50 for it cut to size. Letting in 10% of light sounds a bit extreme, personally.

Have you thought about using the automotive tinting stuff on your plain glass?

I have thought about automotive tinting, I just didn't know if the prices were reasonable. It seems like buying graylite was not much more than clear glass. Just wondered what other people have used, I read some have used tinted Plexiglass as well.

Anybody have more info on this?

I live in the Maryland/D.C. area, and when I called Glass Doctor, they said Graylight was discontinued (except for Graylight #2), and that a tempered of #2 piece (25 3/4" x 25 1/4" x 1/8") would be $200, and that a non-tinted tempered piece would be $100. I asked about what they had available just to get an idea on pricing.

He also offered to tint my existing glass for $8 a square foot, but I'm leery of doing that because I'm pretty sure it's just plain plate glass (it has some small chips at the bottom from being taken out of the cab and it hasn't exploded yet).

He also offered something called "safety film" which appearently works much like laminated glass does when broken.

I'm gonna try some more places but I'm starting to wonder if tint film is the only affordable option for me in this area.

Edit: Also, I still haven't heard a clear answer on if there is any correlation between the number assigned to the glass (Graylight 31, for example) and the light %.

It looks like onedayglass.com would be a better option (if I'm avoiding tinted film), even with the shipping charges:

Shape: Square/Rectangle
Glass Type: Tempered
Glass Thickness: 1/8"
Glass Tint: #31 Gray (1/8" Dark Gray)
Edgework (Step 1): Seamed Edge
Option: No Tong Marks
Width: 25 1/4"
Height: 25 3/4"
Sub Total:    $46.73

 Shipping Options
FedEx Ground (Delivery Within 7 Business Days)       $30.00
FedEx Saver (3 Business Days)       $56.00
FedEx 2nd Day Air (2 Business Days)       $75.00
FedEx Next Day Air (Next Business Day)       $126.00

This is for a Dynamo HS-5 btw, in case anyone wants to impart some specialized Dynamo wisdom. ;)
