Stick On COin Door
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:03:27 pm »
Is there anywhere to get a stick on coin door? What I mean is a fake coin door that sticks on the front of the cab like a sticker. I know I had seen one somewhere

RandyT at Groovy Game Gear has them on his website but they are sold out at the moment.

http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=89&products_id=308

Maybe he will chime in and give you an estimated time frame for when he will have them in stock.

When Randy has em back in stock...get it...I got one when i was building my first cab...and i loved it... Now to be truthful, I wont get another one...( I have a couple of actual coin doors) but I do have to say i like it for the originality... I also bought 2 of the lighted coindoor buttons from GGG also...you can see pics of it here...

I'm not trying to steal Randy out of a sale or anything but do yourself a favor and buy a real coin door.  You might think that because you won't be using quarters on your mame cab that they are useless, but they are not.  First off you can rig the coin returns (with the aid of a well placed blade ms) to coin up for you.  Secondly it transforms a "home made" cabinet into something looking much more official and lastly you now have a door that gives you quick access to the inside of your cabinet as well as giving you a better place to mount admin buttons than on your control panel.

Btw I am NOT suggesting you buy one new from happs.  They are over-priced!  You can get one off ebay, shipping included, for under 50 bucks.  You might have to paint it, but that isn't much of a chore... just take it apart, spray some black on it and you are good to go.

Why don't you just print one up at Staples/kinkos?

Randy actually has some lighted coin return buttons that come with microswitches built in. I wired them to my coin buttons, but honestly I never use them. What with them being allllll the way down there, and me being wayyyy up here. They look great though. I wonder how they would look added onto the coin door sticker? Probably like crap, but maybe not?

That sticker is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen in this hobby.

 :o

Lol... it is ..but when i was starting out and i had no idea where to go looking for a real coindoor... i thought it was cool... I still have mine on my cab, im just too lazy to remove it...( why fix it when its not broken ) i figure i use the real doors on my upcoming projects (working on a dedicated vertical) To be honest, im glad Randy has em...its a great alternative to people who are not as dedicated as we are... :D

Look at my earlier link...it has the photos... look for Brad G... My is lighted and wired and I agree, i never use mine either...

Ah! I didn't know you put the lighted buttons on the sticker, thought they were separate projects (admittedly didn't look..). They don't look horrible with the sticker... better than the sticker by itself I have to say.

It does i must say... I was worried bout eventuallly the sticker could be damaged over time and i placed a scrap peice of pexi over it...it protects it...it looks cheesy ( depends on what mood Im in..lol) but truthfully, all the people who have came to my house and have seen the cab ...they are blown away and always ask.."Hey man you got Donkey Kong?" I think they dont even notice the coin door...

If I build the cabinet from scratch, I don't bother with coin doors.  They serve absolutely no purpose on a MAME cabinet.   :P

Yes they do... they keep it from looking like an ikea cabinet.

Coin door = awesome
no coin door = lame weekend project

Coin Door Decal = Better than blank

Fixed that for you :).  BTW, the more recent incarnation of that decal actually looks a fair bit better than the early version shown in the photo.  It's hard to tell they aren't real from a few feet away.  I'm looking at finding ways to get the price down on them.

If I want something that looks exactly like an arcade cabinet.... I'll buy an arcade cabinet.

Anyway, enjoy your machines.

Which poses the obvious question.  Why in the world would you build a mame (or whatever cabinet) from scratch, bother to use accurate arcade controls and designs and then NOT do you best to make it look like something you could find in a real arcade?

I've got arcade cabinets as well, but when I build a mame cab, reagardless of if the design is original or a rip-off of a real arcade model, the end result always looks like something that wouldn't be out of place in an arcade.  I really don't that that's possible without some sort of coin mech device.

Well my cabinet is a console cabinet so its not really a mame or arcade emulator cabinet. I am putting an xbox 360 in it so I just want it to mock/look like an arcade cab. Its just a cheap alternative to a real coin door. I may go with the fake coin door from Happ its like 35 bucks but has no mechanisms in it. So Randy any idea when it will be back in stock?

I have one left, at the moment, that I offered to someone else a few days ago.  If I don't hear from them by Monday, it's yours.  Drop me an email then, and I'll make sure you get it.
