My cab is in flux right now...

I'm using bitbytebit's fantastic groovymame linux liveCD and it has two frontends to choose from.  It comes with advmenu and Wah!cade.  Right now both have their advantages and disadvantages.  Since I'm having trouble getting Wahcade to use avi videos and mp3's I thought I'd try advmenu.  Since it only supports mng's, my video resources are small.  I've downloaded crashtests's mng's from PD, but it's from mame  0.101 or something like that. 

Since I'm using 0.142 and I was told that MAME mng creation was broken after a certain version...which version would be the most recent that still can create mng's?  I'd like to be able to have an "up to date" set if it's even possible?
