Thanks!

It was fun designing and testing it.  I needed something for my games because I was tired of dealing with Token jams, coin rejections, etc...   This solves all those problems.

I just got mine yesterday, and it works great! It's a perfect replacement fit, and it takes all my tokens with no issues (I threw a dime and a few pennies in as well, but I'm not really planning on using those!). Brien's a great guy, and if you are looking for something like this, it's worth picking up. I had some issues with some quarter mechs I converted over for tokens, which is why these appealed to me. Brien was good enough to let me pick them up since we live in the same city, and I got to check out his home arcade, one I had seen in GameRoom (along with the famous Robotron Mini Jukebox).

Thanks for the mechs and the fun time, Brien!

Got mine the other day and tried them out yesterday. They work great in my Happ coin door.  I did have a little trouble with dimes, but that seemed due to the weight of the dime not being able to trip the switch in the coin door- not the mech. I may try putting a tiny fishing weight or something on the tripwire to reduce the amount of weight required for a trigger. Any other ideas out there?

The best thing though is that this mech does not jam at all. I modified my previous mechs, but they would still jam occasionally- and that is a pain when people are playing. This won't jam!

I also modified one of these new ones, and now it accepts coins up to US Half Dollar size without issue. I have a bunch of foreign coins that I use with the machine and some of them are quite large.

Well done! Very simple and trouble free. Most pleased!

Yup. I'm already thinking of ordering another set for an unused coin door I have, just to have them for future use. It'd also be a nice excuse to check out your home arcade again! :)

Alright, forgive me for being original arcade ignorant - please enlighten me.  I understand the purpose of the all coin mech, most mech's are carefully set up for the size coin they are supposed to register.  does this thing have a switch in it somewhere? any coin you put in triggers the switch?  I don't see it in the picture.  This replaces the entire coin mech inside the coin door?  it just looks like sheet metal.  Maybe a pic of one installed?

-signed "befuddled, but ready to learn"

Thanks.

If you take a look at this thread:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=22251.0

You'll see that a lot of people get real coin mechs and spend a lot of time modifying them to take different size coins/tokens.

Even with these modifications you still have problems with coins always being rejected, or jamming inside the mechanism.

Since I own 45 games, (25 in the game room at any given time), I got tired of unjamming games, having to keep tweaking mechs to get them to accept tokens, etc... So after talking with a friend about the problems, I sat down and designed up the replacement you see above.

They are made from Steel and are Laser cut.  They are zinc coated to prevent rust/corrosion.

Now when someone puts a token in one of my games, it works every time.  No jams, no rejects.

Coin mechs sit above the switch. If the right coin passes through the mech, it drops down a chute that trips the switch. If a wrong coin goes through the mech, it drops through a chute that lands it in the coin return. These "Any Coin Mechs" drop all coins to trip the switch and fall into the coin bucket. (You probably already knew that though). Most coin mechs look similiar to these and mount to brackets that are mounted to the coin door. The switches are mounted seperately to the same brackets, just under where the coin mech mounts.

Here's a photo of them mounted in my cab:

As you can see, they install like a regular coin mech. Your switches still need to be there, but now you don't have any more rejects/jamming.

So you could take a piece of wood, route out a channel the width of your largest coin, depth of your largest coin, line up the channel for coin entry/exit and fix a cover over the channel?

You could also go the toilet paper roll route:

But I think the "Any Coin Mechs" are a much better way of achieving this.

Actually, Brien did some prototypes that were similar to this (he showed them to me), but he told me the problem was that the coins were falling too fast to register credits on the switches. By adding the platform/ridges, it slows the rate of the coin, allowing it to be correctly read. It also gives it a more 'mechy' feel as you hear the coins moving through the device.

brill! I was wondering recently if something like this existed. I'll be ordering one to use in Coin-II on my MAME system (while Coin-I remains on US Quarters/100Yen coins). That way I can use both tokens and quarters/100Yen slugs, etc without letting everyone know what's going on. (When I'm not in a good mood, I may make visitors use their own quarters...)

I have a pile of .900 tokens somewhere, as well as old Namcot tokens so this is a perfect, all-round solution.

Does it still have a magnet, or will washers/steel slugs trigger it as well? -GG

No magnets.  Basically, if it's round and fits in the coin slot, it will make it through  ;D

Hah, that's the Ms Pac cab that I worked on last fall. Pretty crappy solution, if you ask me ;)

I'm in for more of these, when they're available...

Happy New Year!

Ok, I have them in now, and I will be PM and emailing this week with details on how to order.

I just got back from Vacation, so it's going to take a day or two to get settled back in.
