what is best kind of switch for MAME gas pedal setup?
« on: April 27, 2011, 09:55:10 am »
I did a brief search before asking this and did not find anything specific enough to answer my question so here goes:

I'm setting up the gas pedal in my Monaco GP cockpit so it will play Pole Position via MAME.  I am going to wire the gas pedal to a mouse PCB button by using a microswitch.  I know I need a switch that has the N.O., N.C., and Com leads so that its connections will match those going to the mouse.  I plan to buy the microswitch at Radio Shack.

Can anyone tell me what specs the switch needs to have?  For example, I have a joystick switch at the house which is rated 10A, 1/2HP, and I was going to use that, but the part that presses in to close the switch is a bit stubby.  I thought maybe buying one of the switches with the roller tip on it was a good move, I just need to make sure I buy one with the proper specs or rating.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

dont use a button... use half of a analog stick.

If you are wiring it to a mouse, you can pretty much use whatever you want, that thing pulls 5volts at the most, assuming its USB. Analog would be the way to go, if the game supports that type of input.

For now I just want to get the project up and running 100%, and the most efficient means for me is a switch.

There is no analog pot on the gas pedal for this game, or I would have considered going down that path.

The mouse PCB is installed up by the steering wheel (so it can use the X encoder).  So, I'm running 3 wires down from that board to a micro switch that I'm going to install down by the pedal somehow.

I just bought one of these to do the job:

Wish me luck!

Maybe in time when I have learned more of the art of MAME and its intricacies, I'll try an analog conversion.
