Monitor blown, novice needs advice
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:30:39 pm »
Hi Guys

I am a complete novice, I bought a mame machine in a cabinet off ebay for about £500 sterling 3 years ago and had loads of fun on it.

Then I transported it from the uk to new zealand, and didnt use it, then transported it back to the uk and didnt use it, and now have transported it back to new zealand again and have finally unpacked it as we are settled now.

It wasnt used for around a year and a half while in transit.

When I turn it on, it all fires up, you can hear the pc come on, the machine all lights up and looks sexy, but nothing in the screen, however I can hear a hum from the monitor.

I am a complete newbie to all this and would really appreciate any help in getting my baby working again.

Cheers

You are probably going to have to pull the back off and take some pics, or write down a model number of the monitor etc so people can better help you. And a mod to move this to the monitor section maybe...

You're probably going to need to either ID the monitor yourself or get some decent pictures (use a real camera, not a cell phone, if at all possible) of the CIRCUIT BOARDS.  The label on the tube says pretty much nothing.  You may also want to get a moderator to move this to the monitor forum as some of the technical people hang out in there moreso than the main forum.

Aside from that, basic monitor troubleshooting:
1. Does the neck glow (from the heaters inside the tube)?
2. Do you hear the "flyback whine"?  This is the high pitched (15kHz) whine that standard res monitors make when running.  Not everybody can hear it, unfortunately.
3. Is the monitor making a "ticking" sound periodically or once upon startup?
4. Is high voltage present (do you get static charge on the tube face)?
5. Crank the "screen" control on the flyback up a fair bit and see if you get a "raster pattern" (diagonal lines on the screen) and bright gray background.

Be aware that there are some fairly dangerous electrical bits on a CRT monitor.  In general, if you don't touch it while it's on and stay away from the big red wire and "suction cup", you won't get bit, but do exercise some care.

Also the neckboard (the circuit board attached to the "neck" of the glass tube) looks to be at a weird angle, but that may just be due to the picture.  Is it fully situated onto the tube?  Is the glass of the tube neck cracked?
