Cheats to real ROM's?
« on: August 26, 2003, 08:14:23 pm »
How can you relate the cheats in mame to real ROM's?
I want to add the Ironman always on first lap to my Super Off Road but when I try to find the rom with the info from the cheats (in mame form since they are already dumped) it comes to about 12 possible ROMs! :o
How do you tell which rom is storing the info that needs changed? I tried changing all the ROMs with the hex address E186 to 63 (using a hex editor)and it doesn't work (in mame).
Am I missing something?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

I am not sure, but there was SOMEONE in the community who will make a cheat EPROM for just about any game for a fairly affordable price. He used to sell them on ebay. Maybe check googles archive of rec.games.video.arcade.collecting
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

you're hard-coding a cheat into the actual chip?  or just trying to get the cheat to work in Mame?

Yup, always on first lap!! ;D
Makes it more fun when playing three players so that only one of the three players can win and Ironman is olways on first lap.

And ,yes, trying to put the cheat into the actual Super Off Road ROMs. I have a newly acquired eprom programmer and I have made a back up of all my roms and would like to change a few.
Mostly for the fun of it and to make my games a little different.

I burnt an eprom for Ms. Pac-man (speed up/cheat) and my wife and daughter love it!!

I wonder if you could build a RAM rom.  Like, a set of RAM chips that a computer could program through parallel port or USB, that would fit into the ROM slots in your board.

It'd probably be a lot more expensive than just getting a rom programmer yourself though.
