Newbie here, please help
« on: March 20, 2011, 07:12:04 pm »
2 questions:

The first: I have 2 WICO ball-top joysticks. How can I tell if it is a 4-way or 8-way? Is there a website with pics? I'm not real good on the terminology used as far as parts, so please bear with me. I can post pics if this would be helpful.

The second: Can you use (2) of the 2 player ipacs to play a 4-player game?

You could use 2 ipac2 interfaces if you reprogram and make sure buttons don't interfere. I would highly recommend tu use the ipac4 instead. It's cheaper, and it will be easier to use for that purpose.

Have never used WICO joysticks but in general:

A 4 way joystick can move left, up, right or down. It has a diamond shaped restrictor.
A 8 way joystick can also move left up, up right, down right and down left. It has a square restrictor.

You can tell by the hole in the bottom of the base. 8-way is round, 4-way is diamond shaped. Also, 8-ways are usually black, and 4-ways are usually grey. I haven't seen any that differ from these colors, but I have seen a couple of black bases sold as 4-way, so not to sure.

+1 to what Paul Olson said.

Have never encountered a black base that was actually a 4-way in the real world, but have seen then listed as such on eBay.

If you hear *any* clicks, then you almost certainly have 8-ways since I don't think Wico made a 4-way stick using microswitches.
