Ms Pac Man / Pac Man
« on: March 16, 2011, 01:15:40 pm »
Question on Ms Pac Man and Pac Man.

It has been years since I played the actual games with a quarter. Doesn't mean I wouldn't drop a quarter if I found one! Hell, I'd probably try to buy the machine right there!

I don't seem to remember the mazes speeding up as they do with MAME, at least so quickly (I get the mazes beginning to speed up on maze two, sometimes even on maze one).

I have searched MAWS and did not see anything that says the speed was modified. I do know there are ways to increase the speed, but I am not activating this. I also know the maze speeds up as there are less pellets on the board, but I am also not referring to this.

If anyone knows anything on this, please let me know. This will help me from thinking I'm crazy!

A machine can be set to various difficulty levels. This would affect the speed increase you're noticing.

I don't understand what is meant by mazes speeding up.

I know of two difficulty settings and there isn't a big difference between them, but that's a personal observation.

But I think that on the more difficult settings the games starts ahead something like three or four mazes as far as the energizer time you get.

(I should know the exact details, but I just woke up).  ;D

Mazes speeding up: Backround music going faster, ghosts moving quicker, pac man or ms pac man moving quicker.

This happens as you clear most of the board, but I didn't remember this happening when a quarter or less of the board is only cleared on your first guy!

if I remember right, the difficulty levels are accessed in the tab menu (not in front of the game, so I thought I would ask for when I get home)?

What background music? Pacman is either eating dots or not, different sound effect for each.

Sorry, sorry..... not music, the siren or whatever is in the background for noise.

That"s not spose"d to speed up in a level, it"s from level to level. The more levels you go the faster the game plays. Ghost speed, pac speed
and the time the energizer dots are effective
A fast chip [F6] will speed up the game in the same way, It just starts level 1 at a faster speed.. and so on
Rumor has it some had a turbo boost button on the c/p, used to outrun the ghost in a clutch. I"ve never seen this option however. None of my cab"s
have it.
The Pac family uses the same board, just different RAM/ROM sets.

I think you are having a difficult time conveying what you are thinking.

First are you talking about Pac-man or Ms.Pac-man?

I'd have to see the game play on the early mazes in order to tell you if the game was set to normal or more difficult.

(And Blinky's speed does increase one or two times in all the first maze).

I think almost everyone is confused here. Simply:

1. the siren changes pitch at certain dot-eaten points.

2. the 'speed' of things is manifold. Consult the pac-man tutorial for details, but basically Pac-Man and the ghosts run at certain, different with respect to each other, speeds through the game, till at one point where everyone is hauling ass.

Also, everyone runs faster up and down in the mazes than side to side.

These are the same for Pac and Ms Pac.

So far I can't tell any difference between real and mame.  Once I find my book with the patterns in it, then I'll be satisfied. :)

The Pac-Man Dossier describes how the Pac and Ghosts behave:

http://home.comcast.net/~jpittman2/pacman/pacmandossier.html

Quote
Speed

The game starts with Pac-Man at 80% of his maximum speed. By the fifth level, Pac-Man is moving at full speed and will continue to do so until the 21st level. At that point, he slows back down to 90% and holds this speed for the remainder of the game. Every time Pac-Man eats a regular dot, he stops moving for one frame (1/60th of a second), slowing his progress by roughly ten percent—just enough for a following ghost to overtake him. Eating an energizer dot causes Pac-Man to stop moving for three frames. The normal speed maintained by the ghosts is a little slower than Pac-Man's until the 21st level when they start moving faster than he does. If a ghost enters a side tunnel, however, its speed is cut nearly in half. When frightened, ghosts move at a much slower rate of speed than normal and, for levels one through four, Pac-Man also speeds up. . . .

doesnt super pacman have that turbo button you speak of?

ive seen hacked boards that let you hold the 1p button down and the ghosts will go right through you

The start button based speedup speeds *everything* up. The 6F eprom speedup only speeds up the players character.
